Photo Shoot in Borrego Springs
We went out with a local camera club to Borrego Springs in order to practice shooting the Milky Way in the desert. Outside it being 113 degrees during the day, (it was a comfy 85 in the middle of the night when we were shooting) it was a fun time. Upon returning to the Montana I couldn't resist snapping one with it in it.

Now I'm impressed! We were in CA last year, but couldn't see squat with all the smoke and ash. GREAT photo!

I used a Nikon D90 with a 14mm lens, ISO 3200 and with a 15 second exposure.

Thanks. I have a Nikon D 7000 with a Tamron 18 to 50 2.8. What should I set it on to get the Western sky.

I hope I can make sense. (I just learned this stuff myself)
Yours is a cropped frame camera like mine. You want to use the 400 rule to know how long of an exposure to keep the stars from moving (actually the earth is moving, but you know what I mean :-) ). Lets say you are using the 18mm setting on your lens for focal length. You multiply 18mm times 1.5. That gives you your equivalent (to a full frame camera) focal length of 27mm. You divide that into 400, which gives you an exposure time of 14.8 seconds. So set your camera to 14 or 15 seconds at your highest ISO ( I used 3200 ) setting and shoot away.

Just to give you an idea of what is available in Borrego Springs (California).
There's not a lot to the town, but it's surrounded by a huge state park. There are also about 130 pieces of what they call "Sky Art" out in various places in the desert around the town. Summer is the best time to see the Milky Way in the northern hemisphere, so even though it can be hotter than heck, a lot of photographers come out to shoot the different pieces of art with the Milky Way in the background.
This is one of the pieces of art:
