Extended Warranty

We just purchased a new 2980RL at the Pomona CA RV show this weekend. And just like when you go to a car dealership, when you talk to the finance guy, they want to sell you an extended warranty. Since we won't take delivery on our rig until mid-December, I can still get the warranty(ies), but I don't know if it's worth it or not. What kinds of experiences have you folks had? Has anyone gotten a warranty and felt the money was wasted? Has anyone not gotten one and wished that they had? Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks.

Hello Bill & Sheri,

We had till the end of our Factory warranty to make this decision. I would think you should too. We kinda made the decision based on our experience during our warranty period.

Congrats on your New Monty

Bill and Shari, we did not get the extended warranty. When this has been discussed in MOC before there were those who felt it definitely worthwhile and those who felt it a waste. HOpefully you'll get a number of opinions so you can make your own educated decision.

I would just caution that you read all the fine print, ask every question you think of no matter how dumb it seems, etc. Make sure you understand all the conditions.

An extended warranty is an insurance policy. They are always a waste unless you have a loss. Since I was once an insurance salesman, I always turn quickly to the exclusion section of the policy to see if they took away more than they gave. Remember, the benefits section gives and exclusions take away. By-the-way, I have the coverage. It was transferable from the former owner for a small fee ($70). So I still have 5 more years of coverage. The previous owner did end up using the policy to replace a malfunctioning black water tank. The problem was created by manufacturing error.

Yes you will have to weigh the pros and cons and take your pick. Insurance is only good if you need it. Wish you luck. Happyrving.........

We didn't take the extended warranty, so far that was a good decision.

Well before we got our 327RKS we had another brand and did not have the extended warrenty. The slide leaked and we didnt realize the extent of the damage until 3 months past the standard coverage. AND NO, the other company did not cover the floor damage. We were told we should have known better and purchased the extended coverage. Without going into it needless to say we no longer have our old trailer, we now have a wonderful Montana and YES we have the extended coverage on this one. I too very seldom purchase the extended coverage on things but I have become a believer that you need to consider what kind of things can happen to your rig and or tow vehicle and can you cover it out of pocket when you need to. It was simple for us. In the old rig $5K plus to fix the floor if we kept it, the price of a full coverage warrenty was $1200. You live and learn. The bottomline is you hope you never need to use it but always have it in your back pocket just incase.

The extended warranty we bought has a deductible per repair, if I wait to get 2 or 3 things fixed then there is only 1 deductible not 2 or 3. Another thing is at the end of the warranty if I have not made any claims, I get the purchase price back. Kinda an incentive to not file any small claims toward the end.

We're still debating this one. Thanks for the input.
