Abnormal tire wear

Went to Sedona, Arizona last winter. My wife was putting in the wheel chocks when she called me over to look at the right rear tire.
The inside edge of the tire was worn away almost to the cord. I guess I was real lucky not to have blown the tire. I checked the left rear tire and it had a little wear on it, but not enough to require a replacement. After we got home, I took it to the dealer where I bought the trailer. He checked all the attach points, shakles and springs. They could find nothing wrong. It will be interesting if Keystone does anything to repair or acknowledge the problem where having. By the way my trailer is a 2001 2955rl.

airmech, several Montana's seem to have this same problem. Mine is a 2004 and my rear axle is wearing on the inside tires. It was still under warranty at the time and I still had a hard time from the axle manufacture (alko) to repair. Their idea was that I had run over something and bent the axle. I decided if I rotate my tires once a year they will need replacing because of age before wear.

Could the problem be the brand of tires or the tread design of the tires instead of the axles? I am interested in knowing the brands of tires that are wearing on the inside. Our Tacoma tires are cupping on the insides!!!

Go Pokes, the Goodyears do the same thing. I think from all the other posts out there that the problem is probably axle alignment.

yep, axle out of camber (or however that is spelled). do a search here on the forum, using our great search engine at the top of this page. you will find several recent discussions on just this subject.

Remember read your warranty, you have a 2 year warranty on those axles. NOT the tires, but the axles.

We just returned from a 5K mile trip and half way thru the trip noticed the abnormal tire wear you mentioned on the inside of the left (port) rear tire. The RV and tires all have about 20K miles on them and for 20K miles all tread wear was equal and normal. But all of a sudden this one tire was abraded down to the cord. At first I suspected some suspension part was broken, bent or out of adjustment. A thorough inspection by a dealer (and me) found nothing amiss. The front and rear axles are 1/2" out of alignment and the wheel is 1/8" toed out. Neither of these values is sufficient to cause this much wear on only one tire. Bottom line: suspect a defective tire. Also, my tires carry 80 psi max (cold) and from now on I will always make sure that they are fully pressurized.

We have a 2004 Mountaineer TT 315RLS which we bought in March. We have traveled about 7000 miles. Our trailer came with Mission Tires Max Load Radials(ST225/75R15) (65 lbs pressure). We do not have uneven tire wear as described in this forum. However, we had a blowout last week on the left rear tire for no reason that I can see. I check the pressure often and have never let them get below 64 lbs. That afternoon we had traveled about 150 miles at 55 to 60 mph although at the time of the blowout, I was going about 35. The tire company (Tireco) has already sent me a replacement tire free of charge, but the name on it is Nankang instead of Mission. I am wondering if anyone else has had trouble with Mission or Nankang tires. I am also wondering if I should replace all 4 tires just to be safe. If so, are there any reccomendations. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I have just noticed the same tire wear problem with my 2955RL Montana 5er. I thought at first that the axles needed to be aligned, but have found that the wheels are bent also. Most wear is on the inside edge of the tires. Our unit is a 2002 model. we now have about 20,000 miles on it. Before my next rip it is going in to a frame straightner for alignment.

JUst returned from dealer & they found the axels bad. He called the Axel co & was told to replace axels & tires. So I left Monty there until next week.
