Great post, Art! So you are saying not to worry about replacing that finicky, plastic hub guard? If they are not really necessary, I will have them all removed. Don't know if there might be something else to help cover the bearing area - probably not. I guess I will just keep checking the hubs and make sure those rubber covers on good and tight?
Seems to me that the cones don't really protect from dust, and stone hits should not be an issue either - unless maybe one is taking an Alaskan trip that includes some pretty harsh roads?
Does anyone else know of any critical function these plastic cones serve?
