Interesting read. I suppose doing it on his budget could be possible, but it would be a pretty simple dull lifestyle that would end immediately as soon as a transmission or engine went out. I sure could not survive on his food budget unless it consisted of only Spam or canned soup.

If you are not making payments on stuff you can travel and eat well as a full timer for $3,000 a month or a little under in our experience. Cut way down on insurance costs plus do a lot of boon docking and you may get that down closer to $2,000, but $500 or $1,000 a month would be pretty rough IMHO.

Growing up in public housing I've seen the other side of that fence, I will stick with my present life style, which is probably somewhere on the fence.

He says "many people live lives of quiet desperation..." I think living on a shoe string would do that to me. Sure I remember some bad days but I always had my family to buck me up. Count me out. I deserve a little pampering in my old age

Been poor and been well off, didn't make much difference could be happy either way. Lose a daughter and a wife and you can understand there are worse things than not having enough money.

What I get out of it is not what I have or don't have, it is the fact that there are many ways of living, and traveling.
Some are not as fortunate, for any number of reasons, as many others are. It is interesting to read (for me) how a person with little means can enjoy the lifestyle we all love. This guy did not give up and say that he couldn't do it, he made do.
I admire that.

Ozz, I agree. I have seen couples spending $8,000 a month, and they are not having near as much fun or enjoying life at someone that are on a $2000 a month budget. We have seen half million dollar class A's and the owners are more about putting on airs, and the pop up down the trail is having a blast. Everyone is different, and looking for a different path. We could go big, or we can go small. God has given us the ability to decide which path to follow. But I could never look down on someone for their life style, if that is the path they chose. I learned along time ago, don't judge, a crash in the market, a multi million dollar health problem, and almost anyone may be getting by on a lot less they planned.

We just could not choose that lifestyle either. Both the DW and I seem to feel the need to have a place to return to called home, our stick build. To each his own for sure.

Like several have expressed, both my wife and myself grew up in what would be classified as poor households today. Our families where classic blue collar and we cherished everything earned. We have been worked hard for what we have now and know GOD has given us many opportunities to choose the paths we have taken but also know that it can be gone in an instant so we make sure we take it one day at a time and hold dear what we have today. The full timing lifestyle means a lot of different things to different people. What each person makes of it is neither right nor wrong, we all have to read the chapters in our book of life differently.

As the old saying goes "whatever floats your boat!"...

We have no regrets on how we have done things.

One of the things we enjoy about our lifestyle is the different people we have met and the friends we have made. Our neighbor at our current resort has a high rise condo that is being remodeled so they are staying in their new 42' diesel pusher for a couple months. They are really nice folks. At our site we use for a few months in Illinois our neighbor is a construction worker, spent time in prison when he was 18 years old, and his DW and he are really nice folks. We can relate and socialize with either of these couples and find them both interesting, partially because we all have something in common.

I started out camping in a van back in those late 70's shagging wagon days.....Lord I hope I never have to go back to those days....lol lol I mean I did have a sweet setup but I am too dang big for livin in a van..lol lol.... And like has been said I worked too dang hard to live like that.... We all make choices on how long and how hard we want to work to get to a point we want. And even while working you can go out and see this big beautiful world and do a lot of things on your bucket list.... So I would rather, and did, work hard early on to be able to continue to mark off items on my bucket list. As I see it he quit early but now lives in a itty bitty van and has a view, sometimes, but very little money left to do the things that when I die I can look back and say "yeah that was fun". Now if something happens to where you can't work that is something else, but if you quit early I call it lazy...just my opinion.....Besides have you seen the price of Spam lately,,,,,lol lol
