I-40 or I-81???

Need some advice. Heading to Mid-Atlantic Rally next month and my DW has a great fear of the NC mountains. We have a choice of two routes. We can go I-40 up Black Mt, through Asheville and into TN or we can go up I-77 to Wytheville, VA, then catch I-81 to near Sevierville, TN. It will take about 30 mins longer on the 81 route but it doesn't look as mountainous. Has anyone travelled both and if so, which one will keep my co-pilot from "spazzing" too much? Thanks for the help.

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
Give her a bottle of Vodka and head for the mountains.

Run the mountains, its not a big deal and is much prettier.

I-77 to I-81 you will deal with Fancy Gap, but for only about 8-10 miles. I-40 you will be in the mountains for a bit longer, but as mentioned is definitely a scenic route. View from Fancy Gap hill is not too shabby either. I-77, I-81 intersection can be problematic at times due to traffic congestion. Best bet is probably the shortest route.

I've done both routes going from Raleigh to Knoxville. In a car the time is a wash due to the slowness of I-40 vs. the speed of I-77/I-81. I would not make up my mind until closer to the time for the rally because I-40 gets closed due to rock slides as it is right now. Saw something in the paper about some preventive removal of some rocks this week. The big climb out of NC into VA can be windy, but I came down on a windy day from up north and no issues. Put the tow/haul on, exhaust brake on, and put it in cruise control at 65 MPG all the way down. Never hit the breaks.

I will decide my path based on if I go early and want to stay in the mountains some before I go to the rally.

I travel 81 and 71 every year I go to Florida. Not a problem and as said there is one section that has a 7 mile climb but it's an easy pull.

We do the I-77 pull pretty regular with the Monte through Galax and Hillsville and that doesn't bother her. She has a stigma about Black Mt. I-81 is only about 30 mins longer so that might be the best way to 'keep the peace'.
