Park or Campground in Portland Area?

Looking for recommendations. After leaving the rally at 7 Feathers, we plan on spending a week in/around Sisters.. we love that place. After that, Barb wants to head up to Portland for a few days to do some quilt shop schmoozing. Then on to Hood River for a few days.. then on to Ellensburg WA for our woodcarving event.

So, the question is.. Recommendations for camping in/around Portland. It's a fair drive from Sisters and wouldn't leave much of the day to do anything before turning and heading back.

State campgrounds in OR are awesome.. at least the ones we have been to. We are GS members. Also National park campgrounds might work.. but they, in our experience, tend to have small spaces. Private?

We are open for options. Would rather NOT go to luxury type parks as we don't tend to use the facilities enough to make it worthwhile.

Looking forward to what your might have to share.

Thanks, Bill n Barb

There is a State Park a little ways south of town called Champoeg. We have stayed there a few time but it is maybe 15-20 miles outside of town..

About 30 miles north of Portland up I-5 in Washington is Columbia Riverfront RV Park http://www.columbiariverfrontrvpark.com/ We love this place. It's right on the Columbia river and you get to watch the ship traffic going and coming from the port of Portland.

I have stayed in Portland twice for 3-4 days each. In my opinion there ARE NO 'luxury' resort places!
We stayed at Portland Fairview RV Park. The luxury was cable tv and Wi-Fi. Don't know if that qualifies...
My wife is also a quilter and we found the biggest fabric store she has seen in Portland, so happy spending Barb!!

We are in TriMountain RV park in Ridgefield Wa. It is on I5 at exit 14 about 14 miles north of Vancouver. We are 20 min north of Portland. The park isn't fancy but is close to those two cities. Contact Brenda at office 360 887 8983/ cell 360 904 2921; or PM me for more info.

The Columbia River RV park is very nice, we have stayed there in July during warm weather, it is always "breezy"!

Another vote for the Champoeg (pronounced sham pewey - don't ask me why) State Park. Just another really nice Oregon State Park with minimal amenities. The newer "B" loop has large spaces that easily accommodate Montanas. It is also just south of the Camping World (no sales tax in OR!!!) and close to Portland.

Another vote for Columbia Riverfront RV Park. The only issue we had was, DW forgot to tell me that the park people told her to take the north exit off I-5, not the south one that takes you through downtown, which is the way the GPS took us. We finally found the park, but this was my excuse to purchase an RV GPS that has park locations programed into it.

Yes, good point, you want I5 exit 22 "dike road" then go west, past the new Walmart, a mile or so then bear left at the T curve. Park will be on the right next to the river. Do NOT take exit 21 at Woodland, which is one mile south of 22.

Thanks everyone.
Champoeg, at last call, is full.
Columbia Riverfront gets a bunch of poor ratings and a bunch of good ones. Poor mostly for noise.. and some undesirable's. But, a LOT of people, both here and the other forum recommend it.. so, we'll make a point of trying a reservation tomorrow.

Other state parks in the area don't seem to take reservations...

Onward.. thanks again.. Bill

I would keep looking at the online reservation site for OR. state parks. I have had good luck with getting a site if someone cancels.. I have been known to check every couple of hours to see if something opens up..

Another OR State Park option is L. L. Stub Stewart northwest of Portland. Most OR state parks have a few sites that are first come, first served (non-reservable). The question is: "Do You Feel Lucky??"

We've had trouble finding one also. We are going up in July and finally decided on trying Sandy's Riverfront RV in Troutdale.
