Travelling thru Siskiyou Mts. in Dec?

We are planning on heading to Yuma Dec 15 this year -- will be departing Ft. Langley BC and travelling I5 through the Siskiyou Mts. -- anyone done that route in December -- what can we expect as far as road conditions, etc. Have done it many times in October but never gone this late. Are chains required , how many and what kind do we purchase. Have also heard of cables -- what are these? Lots of questions -- any information would be greatly appreciated.

It think it mainly depends on the weather at the time you are there. I would think chains are a good idea. Also one for the trailer.

We used to live in Mt.Shasta so have good info on the subject. I would check the weather reports & not go thru when the area is expecting a storm. Be flexible & maybe stay in Medford if you need to. If the storm is too bad they will close the road. They get the road cleared as fast as the can as Highway 5 is a the major north/south route for freight on the west coast. If it was me (being lazy & all) I just woulnd't deal with chaining & then taking them off only to put them back on again.(there may be many miles in between needing them on) Its cold & miserable & your fingers are freezing & you're kneeing in slush & well you get the picture. And maybe it will be a beautiful suuny day when you go thru. Good luck D.& T.

Les, Do a “Google” search for Washington, Oregon and California traffic cameras so you can see the traffic flow and the weather at real time on I-5 through the passes.
Last year in mid December there was ice in southern Washington and northern Oregon that was very bad…. It’s a wonder that I-5 hasn’t flooded with all the rain.

Les why would want to leave beautiful British Columbia? OK the sun and warm days sound very inviting.

We are planning leaving the same day from near Bellingham! Plans may change due to wx. There is so much travel information available these days. Just stay someplace till it is good to go. If I remember correctly you will be at Q. We can than trade tales. Just go slow and safe.

You are required to carry chains in the winter month when going over the passes, if you get stuck without chais it can really cost you. I carry them for the truck but not rv even though CA requires u to chain up trailer also Watch the weather, check ODOT for road reports, and drive safely

Les, we are leaving on Nov 28 for Palm Springs and then on to Q for the rally. We carry chains for both the truck and the RV, but don't plan on using them. We bought them at Les Schwab. As every one has advised, look at the Calf & Or weather cams http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi and http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/RCmap...RoadConditions. This will give you a good look at the pass areas. Most important, be safe and take your time. See you a Q

Dennis - do we need chains for all the wheels on the RV or just one pair on the RV and one pair on the dually?

Thanks everyone for all your help, great info. Les

Won't be gone long this year --- need to dry out a bit -- will be back when the sun comes out again

Les, you need to carry chains for one drive axle on the TV and one axle on the RV.

Last winter I put a set of chains on the Monty. The center divider that hangs between the tires rubbed against the chains. 15 feet and those chains would have shredded that divider. You might want to verify you have the clearance for chains. I think cables would have worked. Travel Safe,
John

Thanks -- we will definitely check the clearance --- we were considering the cables - perhaps this will make our decision for us. Les
