Campground close to South Bend, Indiana

We are going to be visiting friends in the South Bend, Indiana area on our way to the Fall Rally in September. Can anyone recommend a good campground in that area? Thanks so much.

Hi Carol! We are from Indiana and have stayed all over the state. I would like to suggest that you stay at Potato Creek State Park. Depending on where in South Bend your friends are it would be between 15-20 mile drive. Go to the website http://indianastateparks.reserveamerica.com/ We use the State Parks more than private campgrounds. We like the sites in the range of 178 - 169. Fairly large sites, close to comfort station and no additional sites right behind you. This park fills up rather quickly, but I just checked and many sites all available. These are NOT full hook up sites. Electric only with 30 amp service. There are other private campgrounds that we have stayed at and liked but they are closer to Shipshewana which is more than twice as far away. Hope this helps. Sammie Robinson

Thank you so much for info. This is the campground that we are looking at. They do have about 7 sites with 50 amps. Think I wull go ahead and make reservations since it is a Notre Dame football weekend. Do wish they had water hook ups though, but we can manage. Thanks again for your response, makes my choice easy now.

You are welcome! It's a nice park with great walking and biking trails. Our camping club is going there in July for a weekend outing. They used to close and lock the park gates at 11:00 at night. I will check to see if they still do that and let you know. Sammie

If I'm not mistaking, there is a KOA in South Bend. Would have to get on their web site and check it out. Don't know much about it.

Thanks, MIMF, there is one but it is VERY expensive and I'm not fond of KOA 's so looks like Potato Creek will be our choice. Thanks for info though.

The distance may be further than you want, but check on Eby Pines CG just east of Bristol, In. and Shipshewana South CG in Shipshewana, In. Both have pull thru sites with full hook up. Again the distance may be more than you want to drive.

Also there is a campground called Elkhart Campground and I was by it a few times while we were up there last week. It is just off I80 and on Co rd 4. It is very close to Tiara and the surplus parts store.
