Inside tire wear on just one tire

Crawled under the Montana the other day and noticed one tire has severe wear on the inside tread. It's only on the inside part of the tread. All other tires are wearing nicely, including the one on the other end of this axle.

Does this sound like a bent axle or some other problem? We're out of our 12-month warranty by a couple of months. I haven't checked (yet) to see what the warranty is on the axle.

Fortunately we're near our selling dealer for a couple of weeks so this next week I'll drop in to talk to him. But I'd like to get some insights before I do that.

Thanks.

My rear passenger tire is worn so bad that the metal wire is showing. The other tires are fine, even the one on the other end if the same axle. I only have 5000 mi on these tires. A friend of mine said it happened to him and he had to switch to independent suspension on his reg. Let me know if you find anything out.

You could have a bent axle on that side or even loose wheel bearings on that wheel will cause tire wear.

I checke the wheel barrings, and they are fine. Any thing else you can think of?

I had my left rear tire wearing on inside took my trailer and got it aligned and it solved my problem. Had new tires put on and took a 4 to 5 mile trip all tires no sign of wear.

Where did you get it aligned?

Each new Montana we have bought, and there were two of them always goes right to the alignment shop for adjustments. From the factory, there is no great wheel calibration. Is not cheap but my tires last a long time.

Getting a truck and trailer alignment shop to tweak a bent axle is waaayyy cheaper than going to IS unless you have IS on your top 3 mods. Just for a rough check … place a level against your tire vertically. It should be slightly bubble out at the top of the tire. (positive camber) Some have in their mind a bent axle will not hold an adjustment … I've had axle alignments done on my last 3 fivers with permanent success till I traded. Don't bother talking to a dealer … extremely few have alignment capabilities and most all send it off to another vendor and charge you their processing fee on top of what the vendor charged them.

I had the same problem a while back. At first I thought it was an axle problem, but it was the cheap Chinese tire.

We had the same issue on our trip. We made an appointment at a specialty trailer place. It turned out to be a bent axle, so they replaced the axle. We then ended up getting new tires all around, because it was not just the one tire that was worn.

Yup, same issue. I had a bent axle, don’t know how that happened. I replaced the axle and no further problem. Easy way to confirm is to go buy a piece of angle about 2” wide and 8’ long. Lay it across the 2 wheels/tires on the side you’re having wear issues. The angle iron/aluminum should lay flat across both tires when held across them. If you have a bent axle you’ll find/see it easily. Think seriously about installing the MorRyde Xfactor after you resolve the axle issue.

I was told that an axle can get bent by hitting or running over a curb.

I guess it’s possible but it was the rear axle on a tandem axle and no apparent tire or wheel damage or marks. A mystery for sure but fixed now. Replaced the axle and tire (Goodyear G614) prior to a 7600 mile trip. All good

It never ceases to amaze me that a post from 2003 is brought out of the mothballs and given life again. On our old rig we had an axle RUST INHALF and I had it changed out in Texas on our way back from AZ back in 2013. We now have a 2013 Monte which was bought in 2014. I had a problem with tire wear and took it to a big rig truck and trailer company here and they checked the axles and they were fine BUT the alignment of the wheels was way off and thus the tire wear. Cost me about $200 to have the alignment done and it is running down the highways now straight and true. The mechanic at the shop told me he has seen them come in from the factory out of alignment so it does not necessarily have to be from hitting a curb or a chuckhole. It could be from the transporter hitting something alsoi. Oh by the way, I asked about correcting a bent axle and they told me it is possible and they do it all the time. They apply pressure and put the correct bend back into the axle. If you have a flat and get a rookie to come out and change it or change it yourself and you or they do not know where to place the jack on the axle, you or they can also bend that axle with very little effort just by jacking it up. This is why I watch when ever anyone is changing my tires or working on the wheels and having to lift the unit.

So I had about 12k miles which included a round trip cross-country FL/CA with absolutely zero tire wear issues. At the end of those miles I returned it to the dealer to have some warranty repair which included brakes. The next trip after the warranty work FL/LA and return is when I found the problem (probably coincidence).

Again, I stress the importance of where the unit is being jacked if tires are changed or brakes worked on. Even if you had your dealer do it, they may have had a rookie tech jack it up and work on it and that could have done the damage OR they may have hit a curb or a pothole in the dealership and did the damage. One never knows! I caught a mechanic at a tire shop I want to to get a tire replaced and he was about to jack the unit on the axle tube itself until I jumped his butt and told him where to jack it properly. He said he'd never heard of that but did as I told him or I'd have had another trip to the alignment shop! Good luck with yours!

Wore out the inside of 4 new tires on one 8,500 mile trip last year. They made my rig with 6,000 pound axles and 2,500 pound leaf springs. After the trip, I replaced all 4 springs to 3,000 pound. I then used an 8 foot straight edge across both wheels like igalmi looking for gaps where the straight edge should be touching tire. Both right wheels were bent, one in and the other out. I Googled "bent trailer axle repair" and watched someone use a chain and 30 ton bottle jack to straighten. Got both axles straight using that method. Checked vertical alignment with level per dieselguy's procedure, all 4 are slightly bubble out. Put on new tires and am taking another 8,500 mile trip in Sept. Will find out if 4 hours and $32 Harbor Freight bottle jack solved the tire wear issue.

Also, take a look at all of your suspension components and make sure the shackles of that axle are in the same direction as the others. Every once in a while from a bad bounce, pot hole, curb or whatever, the spring inverts the shackle orientation on one axle, could either be front or rear of the wheel, causing a worn tire in in that one spot.
