Montana 3400 Comments

My coach loaded with everything one can imagine for being at the lake for 6 months has a pin weight of 1,900lbs. When hooked up to the truck it will cause the truck to "squat" approx. 1.5" give or take. I would have to say that the 1,770lbs Keystone claims is pretty close to being right.

100lb/ft of torque is what my dealership told me.

We are pulling the 3400RL with Ford PSD F250. I have installed a power chip, trans and egt temp gauges, a auxilliary transmission cooler and air bags. All and all it is a great combination although I am pushing the weight limit. It tows like a dream. As some have said I check the mirror occasionally to make sure it is still back there. Adding the air bags was the best thing I've done to improve the tow. Although I only "squat" about 2 inches I get that back by adding 40 to 60 psi on the air bags. I originally had them installed without a compressor, but quickly learned that I needed one and intalled it myself. I often find myself changing the air pressure for different road conditons and loads such as a full tank of fuel or when having dry camped and through the process, the fresh water from the tanks to the rear has now become waste water in the forward tanks. The transmission cooler was also a very simple addition. We recently traveled from eastern Washington to western Washington over a couple of mountain passes and never saw anything above 175 degrees. The temps on the west side of the stae were in the 80's and on the east side a degree or two on either side of 100.

I'm towing our 3400 with an '04 Dodge 2500 diesel short box. I went with the Pullrite slider hitch. On almost every trip we took prior to buying our 5th wheel, we'd see a truck or two with duct taped back windows and badly damaged cabs. I knew sooner or later, I'd forget and make a tight turn without sliding the hitch.
As it turns out, almost every campsite we've been to ( Calif.) has required jacknifing the truck and trailer to get into the site.

The 3400 is the only Montana model (don't know for sure on the Mountaineers) that I've seen reported as having hitch weight close to what the brochure/specs say. I know both our 2880RL and our 3295RK had/have pinweight considerably above the specs.

I should clarify my earlier comment about an apparent typo in the specs listed on MOC. The 3295RK is shown just above the 3400RL. The 3295RK shows 2300, which is what the brochure says. For the 3400, the brochure says 1770 but the MOC says 2300. I suspect the 2300 lbs shown for the 3400 was copied from the 3295 specs just next to it in the website and brochure specs.
