RV Rookie

HI Everyone, Tom Drury here. WE bought a 2013 Montana Big Sky Model 3582RL in Oct. 2012 and and pull with a 2012 Ford F350 DRW. Wife and I are planing to retire in 2014 and hope to use RV to tour US. We live in southern MD on the western shore of the Cheseape Bay. This is our first RV and so far we are enjoying the RV experience. We have dogs so now we are able to take with us. We have two children 18 and 19. WE enjoy our family, dogs, fishing, boating, biking and so far RVing.

Hi Tom, welcome from rural Kansas (summers only, we really full time). You'll find this a great place to get answers to your RV questions. Safe travels and we hope to meet you down the road.

You have found a great source of information and occasionally humor (but keep that a secret, some may or may not approve!!). Keep in mind that at some point, all of us were RV Rookies as well. Welcome to the MOC and don't be shy about asking questions and posting about your trials, tribulations, success stories and soon to come adventures!!

You will enjoy retirement and traveling in your Montana. You will no longer have to rush to where you are going.

You will not be a "rookie" long if you continue with the MOC. Lots of experience here to help you become a pro. Your choices of equipt show that you are way ahead of most. Happy travels!

There isn’t much that I can add to what’s already been said. You have found the encyclopedia for the Montana’s. Great information here for sure; If you take in a rally or two you will be able to make & meet a lot of new friends along your travels. There is a whole section just on the rallies. Hope to meet you along the way sometime.

Welcome, Tom. Every last one of us was a rookie at one time. And some of us, especially me, remain rookies in some areas no matter how much rv'ing we've done.

You are about to start on what might be a wonderful adventure. Or it could be a nightmare. For us, the past 10 1/2 years of traveling this country have been truly magnificient. One of the things we learned early on that I think allowed it to become a success for us was to slow down. We are retired. We're no longer on vacation. We no longer have to rush to get somewhere and once we are there we don't have to see everything there is to see in a week or even two. If we did those things we'd burn out rather quickly. Now we take the time to enjoy the trip and to get to really experience and explore an area. For example, last Spring we left Bishop, CA for Topeka, KS, so to visit kids and grandkids. It took us three weeks to make that trip. A few years ago we planned to spend a month next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park so we could do the hikes to waterfalls, etc. We enjoyed it so much we extended to seven weeks. We explore/sightsee maybe 3 times per week, leaving weekends to the tourists. What I'm trying to say is don't hurry. Take your time and enjoy it. Make your travel days shorter (we do 150 to 250 miles per day, most of the time). You will figure out what works for you. Enjoy. It's a wonderful lifestyle if you let it be. Good luck to you.
