Furnace propane supply
We're on our 3rd Montana and have a problem I've never experienced with the propane supply to the furnace.
Sometimes, more often than not, the furnace will not ignite and run when being fed from the ODS propane cylinder. Usually try it 2-3 times and still won't but if I manually switch it to the DS cylinder it will ignite and run as it's supposed to. Both cylinders have plenty of propane and I have even switched sides with them and get the same results so that should rule them out as the problem.
I have also replaced the pigtail on the ODS with a new one so that should also be ruled out. My only other thought is maybe bad regulator/auto switchover. The cooktop, oven, and water heater all work just fine. Neither cylinder has recently been filled.
We are full-timers and really need this thing to work as it should this winter!
Any ideas from the experts?

When the furnace doesn't work will the W\H, stove, cooktop still work? Try closing the tank valves bleed off the lines then open the tank valves very slowly.

Yes, all other appliances work fine and I always open valves at a snail's pace. Was very careful about that when switching tanks to other side.

Do you leave both tanks open all the time so the auto switch can do it job. I know some other that like to leave one off till it runs out and then go open the other tank witch does not make much sense that is what the auto switch over is for! It mite be the auto switch over! but that should affect all the gas not just one thing but I have seen strange thing before!

Just to eliminate a tank problem, try swapping the tanks, left to right and the right to left, just to see if there is a problem with one of the tanks. Then try the furnace again. Otherwise, you might be better off getting a mobile tech to come out and check things.

Both tanks are always open except when I remove an empty to take and have filled. Have you ever heard of a regulator input port being partially clogged/defective not allowing proper flow?

I already did the side to side switch of the tanks and get the same result. That should have ruled out tank(s). I think replacing the regulator/switchover would be more cost effective than tech labor.

Montana keeps moving the location of the Changeover Regulator from side to side. So I have to ask, is the Changeover Regulator on the ODS side and the small red Regulator on the DS?? Also, is the side where gas is *NOT* flowing from the same as the red Regulator?
Those red regulators are notorious for causing problems. The Changeover Regulator is less so. But I believe you have a regulator problem and changing it is the next thing to try.

The ODS is where the main regulator/switchover is and is the problematic side. The DS is where the small red regulator is and it works fine.
Yes, unless someone has a better idea in a couple of days I think new regulator is in order. I don't see that it could be much else. If I get a new one I think I will get a 350,000 BTU High Capacity instead of the standard 225,000 BTU. Your ideas on that?

Life would be simpler if we said port or starboard or even right or left.

What about the rigs that have doors on both sides? Then what do you do, maybe curb side and road side?

When I did a lot of offloading we had spotters use driver and passenger so as not to confuse folks depending on which way they looked at a rig.

To get back to your original problem, you need to get someone to check the propane output from that regulator. Since the furnace probably uses a lot more than the other things you may have a pressure problem.

The regulator output should be fine because the furnace works great when fed by the DS LP tank. Maybe the ODS regulator INPUT port is bad.
As stated before, I think I will replace the regulator/switchover with a high capacity one (350,000 BTU vs 225,000 BTU).

Just a passing thought on auto switchover. I don't ever want to be 100% out of propane so I leave the switchover set to one side. When that tank is empty it only takes a minute to go outside and switch to the other tank. That same day, I refill the empty tank.

Had a similar problem. Dealer found and fixed crimped gas line under one of the tanks. Hopefully, my last warranty issue.
