We have a Uniden VHF and use it only when we travel with friends who also have VHFs. We don't have to put up with the truck talk and the reception and range is a lot better. Can also monitor the weather channels. For music we have Sirius and if we want to hear what the truckers sound like we can listen to Blue Collar Comedy.

We also use a CB. Cobra I think. Don has to have it on all the time!!!
Works great for checking the weather and checking for trouble up ahead. Also for fuel stop information. We use 19 and 13.

We use ours just in case of back up. Have a 40 channel radio shack. Works well. Ch 19 is an education. Truckers of yesteryear were real professionals. They appear to be in the minority today with the cowboys out there.

Just to affirm a previous post, channel 17 is the N/S choice in Northern California, Oregon and Washington. It seems most truckers (aka Drivers) tend to use normal conversational language and don't tolerate the rare foul mouthed individuals. It doesn't hurt that a significant percentage of Drivers are women. The foul ones seem to be locals with high powered units which cover a large area. The Drivers have better things to do with their time.

We too monitor the CB for traffic updates and locations where speed limit enforcement representatives are present (not that we speed, but we don't slow either, and there is a couple of trick "school zones" on Hwy-101 in Oregon).

The worst language I have heard was from some of the base stations around. Very sick puppies out there.

The instructions that came with my Prodigy brake controller say not to mount anything electical (like a CB) within 12" of the controller. Naturally, the ideal location for each is the same place...anybody have any problems with one interferring with the other? Or maybe a good alternative site for either?

I have a 40 Channel, SSB Cobra mounted at least 12" from the brake controller. Both units put out spurious emissions (electromagnetic radiation) that can interfere with each other. I could easily picture a scenario where I key up the CB and have the trailer brakes engage. Hmmm! Oh, I also occasionally use a Palomar 250 "morale booster" when I have trouble talking. It works really well on SSB.

My CB and brake controller are approx. 12" apart or so. To date I have not had any trouble with the CB interfering with my brake controller.
