Mission tires on 2006 Montana 3400RL
We had problems with "Mission" tires size: 235/80R16E. When pulling home with our new Montana 3400RL 2006 from the dealership. First trip and a bare trailer not even a toothbrush mind you and the tires looked like they were going to fall off the wheel plus the hot rubber smell.
This size tire is not a standard recognized size and is from CHINA.
I replaced all 5 tires (incl'd spare) with "Goodyear" LT235/85R16G as a recommended 5th wheel tire by "Goodyear". This is a 14-ply tire and carries 110 PSI.
Presently waiting reply from WV attorney General's Office to prevent this from happening to another proud owner of Montana, plus waiting refund of $1,072.51 from Tire Co. in Calif.
These tires aren't fit for a 5th wheel, maybe a farm wagon??

You need to let Keystone know about this problem also. They've been pretty good about making amends.

Dear HCWms,
The Montana website states the tires are 235/85R16E tires but doesn't state the brand. The latest 2006 brochure for Montana lists the 3400RL as 11710#. The Montaineer website states the tires on their larger 5th wheels are 235/80R16E, but the largest UVW stated for the 2006 Montaineer is 10640#. Apparently, this is the first year that this tire has been used on Mountaineers. In the past, they were D load rated tires. Additionally, using the Internet, I have not been able to find an E load rated 235/80R16 tire.
It sounds to me like Keystone used a Mountaineer tire on your Montana. This also sounds like a MAJOR issue to me! I have just ordered a 3400RL to arrive this month and will not accept an off-sized underrated tire when their website clearly states the 235/85R16E tire will be used.
I will be calling the factory and my dealer tomorrow!!!

When we toured the Montana factory there were piles of tires mounted on rims outside the factory .There were several different brands of tires including Mission. Saw the same thing at the Sprinter plant. Remember..lowest bidder...

Good Evening Richard,
Seems like we both have nothing better to do this evening that sit in front of the PC.
My point is that Montana has stated that 235/85R16E tires will be used. This size tire has a higher load rating than the 235/80R16 tires that are used on the Mountaineer. I see this as a size and load rating issue - not a brand issue.
As I might have mentioned earlier, we finally ordered a new 2006 3400RL last month. This is the heaviest 2006 Montana model and heavier than any 2005 model. I certainly do not want a lessor rated tire than is speced by Montana's web site, and a lessor rated tire than all Montanas were outfitted with for 2005!
Hopefully this was simply a mistake, and I will get the correct 235/85R16E tires.

Parrothead,
Could Be! I have already sent an email to my dealer letting him know that I will be on the look out.
I have no idea if the Mountaineer and Montana are actually built at the same location. If so, this could be a simple mistake. I sure hope my 3400 comes with the correct tires. I like being happy.

My 2006 Mountaineer 329RLS came with "Tacoma Trail AWT" 235/85R16E tires. Who really makes these. I don't know. Tried to "Google" for the parent manufacturer, but didn't really get a definitive answer.

My rig also came with Tacoma tires. I believe they are made by Cooper. I have about 12000 miles my mine and no problems yet.

We also have Tacomas on our 3400. I have sent an email to Keystone asking them to identify who manufactures Tacoma Tires. Google turns up nothing. Will post here if I get a response.

Good Afternoon,
I have been doing some more research and found that Goodyear manufactures a 235/80r16 tire size under the name Marathon. According to Goodyear, this size is made specifically for trailers - including 5ers. I have also found that a lot of the 5er manufacturers are now using this size.
These tires are slightly shorter and wider than the 235/85r16 tires, and the Marathon has a more flexible fabric side wall while a lot of the 235/85r16 tires have steel belted side walls. Goodyear apparently only makes up to a "D" rated tire, but this tire has a load rating of 3000# at 65PSI. This makes for a much softer ride when compared to the 3042# at 80PSI for the 235/85r16E.
All in all, it seems to me that the 235/80r16 tires are "better suited" to the 5er requirements - assuming the tires are in fact well built!
Sometimes, change is for the better.

I'm curious as to what some of the higher end 5vers (Carriage, Nu Way, etc) are using on their units. I know they need higher rated tires, but I would still be curious as to what brands and sizes.

Rick, the Goodyear Marathon is a very common tire on fifthwheels and travel trailers and has been for years. We've had them on three of our four fifthwheels including both of our Montanas. To tell the truth, if I ever need to replace all five tires at the same time I'm looking for a different brand. I'm not real impressed with the Marathons. Here's a picture of one of them from August, 2004. Goodyear replaced this one under warranty, as they have done on several others, charging only for tread used. By the way, the bubble got considerably bigger before the replacement tire arrived. It grew daily. This is day 3.
Dave, our neighbor is a newer Alfa fifthwheel. Its owners are not home so I just went over and looked at the tires. Goodyear Marathon 235/85R16G. Note they are load range G but that is one heavy rig.

Steve,
I'd never seen a tire with a bubble like this before a couple days ago when I was replacing the tires on my wife's Jeep. A Dodge truck came in with Goodyear tires and the rear passenger had at least 10 bubbles like yours. The whole side all round was bubbled out but it was still working. Tire people there had never seen anything like it. Guess at the end of the day it still beats a blow-out.

My new Monty arrived Friday with the new tires. The difference is only in the aspect ratio - 80 vs 85. With the same width (tread on ground) it means the tire sidewall is shorter. This is a good thing for me. I have a second air conditioner and top out at 13 feet 6 inches because of it. That is the max legal height in many Eastern states without a special permit. This shorter tire is keeping the height legal. I understand the load bearing ability is identical.
Happy trails

I just picked up my 3295RK and it came with Mission ST 235/80R 16 tires. load range e max PSI of 80. I have read a lot of complaining about these tires on RV.net. I can't really comment as my new rig sits out there in the bitter cold waiting for spring.

3295RK....Wish you luck on your spring thaw with "MISSION" tires ST235/80R16 PSI 80. Recommend you contact TIRECO> in Calif. to get a copy of their warranty. It is not in the internet. Also have them send a claim form or claims @ TIRECO.COM 1-800-227-8925. Most likely you will need both. These tires are not a standard size. Where will you find another replacement on a trip? Take plenty of Motel Money.

I have the Mission 235/80 Load range E on my new 06 2955RL which is the lightest of the Montanas.
The one front tire has a leak and I will be taking it down to a tire shop I trust and get their opinion on this tire. I suspect these tires are junk and I really believe a LT tire is the best choice. I will be putting 235/85 Load range E LT Michelin tires on my unit because I know you can trust an LT tire. I have been overloading pickups for 30 years, kept good LT tires at max PSI and never had a problem. My last 5th wheel had Goodyear Marathon trailer tires. At 30000 miles I had steel wires popping out of these tires.
No one will ever convince me that the rear tires of a pickup have a different task than trailer tire. Simple, they don't steer and they carry a load.
RV manufacturers can tell people that a TR tire is better, the truth is, it is cheaper for them to install them on new units. IMO
I will post what the tire shop tells me and I have it on record that my trailer was not delivered with the size indicated on the information I had been given by Keystone. I also understand that an 80 series tire only lowers your coach by 1/2 inch in comparison to the 85 series tire. The 85s are 1 inch taller but that is only 1/2" on the tire surface holding the trailer up. I learned this on this forum.
I understand that Montanas used to come with an LT tire and that is what they should come with IMO.
