Microwave problem

Hello everyone! My husband and I have the 2010 Montana Mountaineer 324 RLQ. We keep it parked permanently at a campground. We just took off the winter cover, put the battery back in, and am opening it up for the summer.

Everything is working fine except the microwave. Usually when the electric is turned on, the microwave timer comes and the microwave works. We checked the fuses and all were ok. The light above the microwave works, the fan and light over the oven also work. Everything electrical in the entire fifh wheel works properly except the microwave. Is there some other fuse or something else we need to check with a voltmeter? Maybe there is a fuse blown somewhere that we are unaware of. Does anyone have suggestions or have you had the same problem? Please help. When we call the dealer, they of course want us to bring the unit it in. We have it leveled and really don't want to move it. The dealer is also over 2 hoursw away. Thanks so much for any help!

Jeanne and Tom Cox

the microwave is on a seperate circuit all to itself and will have it's own breaker in your breaker box, at least ours does on our 3400.

The fuses are normally tied to 12v circuitry. You did not indicate if you checked the circuit breakers? A shadetree method to troubleshoot: If without too much trouble, you can access the MW electrical plug, plug it into an extension cord and the cord into a working electrical outlet. If it kicks on, bad circuit. If not, most likely something in the MW itself.

Thanks 1retired06. We did check all the fuses in the circuit breakers. All seemed fine. We will try to access the MW plug and try your suggestion. Thank for the help!

I replaced the convection/MW on my 2005 and it was pretty easy to pull out and reinstall the new one. If you know the MW is at fault and not the fifthwheel circuitry, you can pull it out and take it to a shop so a tech can look at it without having to move your fifthwheel. Good luck, hope something simple. On mine, there was a faceplate on the front of the MW, and when I took that off, there was easy access to the holding brackets.

JSCOX24, I have the same unit as you. Here is a very likely scenario for your microwave. Remove the faceplate screws surrounding the microwave and slide it out. You will find the hidden outlet into which the microwave is plugged. It is it's own separate 20a circuit. That's why everything else electrical in the galley will work.

If you have a meter at this point you can test the outlet, otherwise with the breaker off or electric totally off, remove the outlet faceplate and pull the outlet out slowly. Keystone used these crappy push down connectors on their outlets to connect the wires. When the installer at the factory does the wiring, they just push it on the back of the outlet, this action makes a cut in the wires insulation and holds the wire in place on the connector. If it was not seated properly, it can spring back off and road vibration tends to help this along. Re seat the wire and you should be good to go.

I don't know if you have the half-time oven, or a straight microwave, but either way it will be on a 20 amp breaker, flip it off and back on. The plug will be a 20 amp plug, you won't be able to use an extension cord on it, as they are (mostly) 15 amp prong configuration. Pulling the bezel is a great idea to get to it. Unplug it and test the power at the outlet, if you have power, the problem is with the appliance.
Based on what you wrote, I would imagine the breaker is bad. Flip it off and on a few times, then try it.
Good luck and let us know.
(I know a few folks pretty much said what I said, with a few exceptions, some sharp MOC members here!)

Ours failed in first month and was replaced under warranty. What I learned is that you can buy a replacement (probably different brand) at sears, walmart, etc. for less than $90 bucks, and the install is extemely easy. Probably less than the gas to take your trlr to the dealer! Just make sure you measure your unit and either keep the face plate or get one that is the same size!

I am unfamiliar with your unit but some have a switch to cut the microwave off when using some other appliance such as the fireplace etc.. Have you checked for a switch to see if there is one. Just a thought, but I remember someone mentioning this before on another unit.

Thats right! I totally forgot about the 20amp circuit. When mine crapped out, it was because the door latch broke

Hello everyone ! I wanted to give everyone an update. I went to my camper this weekend. I put the sliders out and looked at the microwave and it was working! I couldn't believe it - we did nothing and now it worked. I was ready to troubleshoot! I had everyone's answers printed out and ready to go! I am glad it's working and still may pull it out and check the outlet. Thanks again to everyone who responded! I appreciate the help!

I'll bet when you opened the slide, a loose wire somewhere remade contact.

Sometimes all it takes is a nasty look or a verbal warning and things start to work! I'd still check the plug in and also check under the slideout to see if there might be a wire that is loose at a junction box or somewhere else alone the wiring to the micro. Glad you can use your MIC again!
