OK finally found out what caused unusual tire wear

I had a thread going a few weeks ago showing how my left rear Goodyear G614 rear tire wore really fast on the inside edge. There is a Goodyear Commercial Tire shop in Reno called Purcell Tire, and they thought I had a loose wheel bearing to cause this problem, so after they mounted two new tires and i put them on a couple of weeks ago, I decided to bring the 5ver by today before our next trip to have them check the wheel bearings. They discovered no grease in two of the wheel bearings, and two more were really loose. Then he said oh oh and should me the rear shackle bolt on the left rear, and it had spun and bent the flanges that are there to keep those yellow octagon washers from spinning. The bolts are supposed to be tightened to 75 foot pounds, and this one was loose and could be moved with a small wrench. So he measured the distance between the axles, and it was 3/8" difference since the octagon washer is used to make adjustments, had rotated from the 6 o'clock position to the 4 o'clock position. So he lubed and adjusted it back to normal, and bent the flanges back. So hopefully my next trip will go well. He said he was surprised that two of the wheel bearings had no grease in them, when my rig is only about 14 months old, and I told the RV dealer to grease the wheel bearings and suspension before the beginning of this season??? So now i have one more thing to check while traveling, and that is to make sure that those shackle bolts stay tight and the yellow octagon washer does not spin.

If you have EZ Lube axles and a dealer with a service tech without a clue, he may have hit 2-3 pumps with a grease gun and called it good.

I am in awe at how we can make all the trips we have done in a year around 20,000 miles, and all the things we have come up against from poor workmanship, or poor service? It disappoints me. Are we not educating the new generation of workers?

Sorry ... I'm not buying the revelation to you that two bearings had no grease in them. You wouldn't have made it 10 miles down any road before the bearing would have failed. Ask for them to tell the story again and let us know what episode two is. If it is the same story ... I surely hope they replaced the bearings along with the races because they would be way used up. Even the spindle would probably have been blue from the heat.

Not educating but attempting training. No matter when the priority is to push them out and get home to milk the cows early. No craftsmanship, pride in the job, or work ethic involved with piecework.

Dieselguy,

There was some grease, but not packed like the other two. He showed me. I was disappointed, because i specifically asked my RV dealer to do this service this past April, before our first trip out this Spring.

Just another example of why one should NOT trust dealers (or Keystone!).

I would NEVER have an RV dealer lube my axles. I do my own, but if I didn't, I would take it to a reputable independent auto/tire shop that had the parking space and wanted the business.

How do you touch the hub with that big metal center cap in the way? I keep an eye on my TPMS system, since it reports pressure and temp. I am assuming the heat would transfer to the tire if there was a major problem.

If you do not have a TPMS, get one. They may help notify you of excessive heat do to bearing/brake issues since they record tire temps which will increase as heat builds from tire/brake/bearing issues.

Infrared guns are very cheap these days and available at home depot, lowes, most auto parts stores. I check my tires and check the hubs with the gun every stop I make...be it fuel stop or rest area as well as arrival at each rv park. I have some blueish on all my spindles due to factory not putting enough grease in when mine was built.

torque stripe,
torque stripe the yellow washers and it will let you know if loose or it spins.
we use it in the airline business on hydraulic lines, to make sure they don't back
off and come loose. or a sharpie something you can use to visibly see while doing a walk around.

As for as the shackle bolt, i assume it is a wet bolt. If it is then you need to replace the nut with a nylon locking nut and carry an extra wet bolt and nut. I had an wet bolt lose the nut and bolt fell out or bolt broke and fell out and wore my right rear tire really bad. I replaced the wet bolt with a grade 8 bolt as i was leaving on a trip the next day. This was a quick fix until i could get a new wet bolt. Our interstates are in very bad shape and these wheel, tire and suspensions take a beating. In the last 15 months i have had 2 factory wheels receive hairline cracks from these roads but the sailuns have held up really well. I now have the I.S. but even that can be compromised with the roads we all travel on. I have learned to always inspect the suspension before making a trip.

Interesting discussions on this subject. We all know that ALL mfg's are looking for ways to reduce the cost - so we see lower quality components and workmanship. But as with everything, when you point a finger, you have 3 pointing back at yourself. We don't like greasing bearings, so someone came up with the E-Z Lube system to make it easy. Most do not like them, but if done correctly, they work as a mid-cycle maintenance process ( raise tire- spin -2 pumps). Many lube / grease fittings have been eliminated - self lubricating so we don't have to do it?!? Annual brake and bearing inspections are expensive and how many of us check TV wheel bearings annually? My High Country does not have wet bolts (yet - soon) but I watch them. TPMS and touch the tires at all stops (TV included)- and if the wheel is hotter near the hub than be the tire - check further - it is interesting to watch the TPMS tire temperature and pressure go up as you drive - Gets to be a lot to keep track of!

I love this site as you learn so much and get a lot of insight. I think we are all seeing that annual PM and a good checklist while traveling can reduce issues. I know I am! Guess it is time to make another checklist.

Sorry if I rambled a little - but great info! Drive Safe friends!

Are the axles Lippert or Dexter?

Montana does not install the hubs on the axles. While messing around with the axles and shackles, consider a product from MorRyde called X Factor. Have them on mine and my tires show no wear.

Plus, they include Wet Bolts. You will need 1 part number for the front and rear shackles and a second part number for the center support. 3 kits total.

They are Dexter axles, and I have the Morryde 4100 suspension. I like the torque stripe idea.
