Portable air compressor questions

I know nothing about these, but am going to get one soon. How much will a 3-6 gallon tank fill on a tire at 80#? i.e. say to go from 70 to 80 and how long?
Also, do these tanks hold air for a long time?
I am looking at Porter Cable and Rigid 6 gallon compressors.
Thanks.

The tanks will hold air a very long time if your connections are tight. You need to have the compressor plugged in to be able to air your rv or truck as the pressure drops significantly when airing up a tire because of the volume of air it takes for these large tires. The Porter Cable is very popular with many on this forum and can be bought for 99.00 at Home Depot and Lowe's around the holiday's.

I was hoping I could air up from 70 to 80 with the tank. Guess not. So is it worth buying a compressor with a tank?

I have a 2000watt inverter hardwired in my truck. Plug in my compressor, good to go.

We've used a Porter Cable for the last 8 years for 110#tires. It doesn't take long to go up 10#s and I never leave air in the tank. Moisture will be in there and draining the air from time to time will get that out and the tank will last longer.

Harbor freight has a 3 gallon pancake compressor for $55.
I would leave the tank on the compressor but to save space you could take the tank off, I guess.

I carry the Rigid 150 Max PSI from Home Despot. That, with a Honda generator will do in a pinch.

I actually use it at home for the 5er tires too, because it works better than my bigger tank compressor. The low tank pressure restart/kick-in on the little Rigid is set at 120 PSI. My bigger 120 Max PSI compressor has the restart/kick-in at 80 PSI, so I have to pull the pressure relief valve to let it vent until the compressor kicks in again for each tire, a real PITA!

avoid the cheap units. they do not last.
all the "oil less" are very noisey buzz boxes.
but the cast iron pumps weight a lot.
but tripple yes get a larger tank.
do not think you must buy a tank/pump combo set up. as the tank can be bought in varied sizes to hard mount most any place you like. and properly sealed air lines to connect to a pump. ( use a fixed air gauge here).
but any of the "better" 110 ac volt compressers will do the job, buy one with with a top psi working at 150-200psi. and think volume as well as psi.

Here'a a portable 12v air compressor kit that was designed specifically for the off road 4x4 community so they can air up and air down their tires quickly. But before you click the link I just want to warn you that it is very expensive. It is a portable self contained unit that connects to your battery. It is high quality and you don't need ac power to run it. I don't have this kit but I have their on board twin air compressor mounted in the bed of my dually connected to a 5 gal air tank mounted under my bed. I have all the air I need for my tires and I can also run air tools if I break down on the side of the road...

What pushed me to spend the money on my ARB system? Well, when I first bought my 5th wheel, I was a newbie to RVing, all I carried in my TV was a basic tool kit and I had road side assistance. Like everyone else my RV had Marathon tires on it. On one trip I lost a tire. At that time I had AAA Plus RV so i called them. After waiting helplessly for hours on the side of the road and several angry calls to AAA someone finally showed up. It was at that point that I decided I will never be stuck on the side of the road again waiting for help.
After a lot of research I decided to purchace and install ARB's top of the line twin air compressor on my TV. It comes complete with all the wiring harnesses, relays and switches need for install. I have it connected to a 5 gal aluminum air tank I mounted under my bed. I have a control panel mounted below my dash with a 160 psi air gauge and the on/off switch for the compressor. It takes around 4 mins to pressurize the 5 gal air tank from 0 to 150 psi. The compressor shuts off at 150 psi and comes on at 135 psi. I have a quick disconnect on the air tank to plug in the air hose. I have no trouble inflating my TV tires and RV tires to 110psi. Plus I also carry a pneumatic bottle jack and impact gun. It runs the impact gun with no problem. I have helped several people at camp sites who have had flats and could get the lug nuts off with the tire iron. The air gun broke the lug nuts loose with no effort what so ever.
Like I said in my other post this is an expensive investment. I did the install myself. To me the peace of mind of not being stuck on the side of the road in the middle of the night God knows where is well worth the money I spent.
FYI,Here is the compressor I bought.

Last month I blew a tire on the Montana. I jacked it up removed the bad tire and when I got the spare ready to install I determined that it was very low on air. So I just plugged my 12V air compressor into the truck cigarette lighter and inflated the tire.

Took 15 minutes to inflate the tire not bad for a $29.95 air compressor.

All total we were on the side of the road for 45 minutes.

I have had portable Viair for some time, used it few times. It is more expensive but worth it as it is very well built and reliable.

It's a tankless job, but somebody has to do it.

Hi

Over the years I have had 2 of the little tankless air compressors and either one of them can be stored in the glove box of our Silverado.

I keep one in the TV all the time you never know when you may come out of a store and find a low tire on your TV. However I have never used it on the TV but have helped people out by pumping up a tire so they could get to the tire store.
