Very Soft Ice Cream.....Why?

I recall others having this issue but I didn't really pay attention because we did have out Monty yet and it wasn't summer. Out last trip, last weekend, the qt. of ice creams was very soft. We had 50 amp service, the outside temp was low 80's, we were parked in an area with lots of trees/shade. The refrigerator section was at 32 deg and all itms were very cold to the touch. Meat and frozen vegetables stayed frozen, but not ice cream.

ice cream is pickey.
can be soft, gooey, or hard as a rock.
all in the same setting, on differnt days.

one or two degrees can make a world of difference.

The freezer in an RV reefer does not get as cold as a residential - typically 0 deg vs -10 deg. The one place this really shows is ice cream. Check the temp adjustment on your reefer - you may be able to get it a little colder. The temp adjustment is on the door where you turn it on and set it up gas, electric or auto.

RV freezers normally don’t get as cold as a home freezer. When it’s cold enough to keep ice cream the refrigerator is too cold. On mine I haft to choose between one big freezer and ice cream.

Ice cream in the freezer? you guys are killing me. Ice cream is lucky to make it home, much less make it to the freezer.

What we just bought to monitor the refrigerator/freezer is a TempMinder with 2 sensors.
When we get our camper back from the dealer We are going to check them out for monitoring temps while going down the road from the truck. This may help you regulate your temps.

Ice cream is more than just water, so some of the ingredients stay soft below 32 F. I think 0 F is the "hard frozen" state you are aiming for. Some freezers may not be able to make it to that temp. Use a freezer thermometer to see if it's making it to that low.

It all depends on the fat content of ice cream that makes it softer or harder. The higher the fat content the softer the ice cream will be. Also if you have a dual freezer the left side of the two is the side to put the ice cream in. Also, if you put it towards the front of the freezer it will stay softer than putting it towards the back. Now if you have a residential frig, I can't help you but the above is what I have been told by the manufacturers of the RV frigs.

On our home refrigerator the freezer stays at -6 to keep ice cream. At zero it’s soft. At -5 or 6 it’s not too hard to dip out.

Think about it for a moment...parked in shade...rv fridges only really cool when the juices are flowing and that is a small window between outside temps and needing colder temps inside the fridge. When it is 32 in the fridge, there is little need for more cooling so the freezer is not getting that flow to drive temps down. If you want hard ice cream, get the lowest fat content you can find.

Try putting the ice cream in the bottom left of the freezer. Works for me.

Bottom left is the only place to try. Folks are correct in that professionally Ice cream is held below -10. Soft serve is dispensed at 18 degrees and as the name indicates it's still soft so 32 is way too warm for even soft icecream. You know how I know.

We had a Never-r-Cold in our last unit, could keep the fridge section around 32, but the freezer would only get to 18, cold enough to freeze things and make Ice Cubes, but not keep Ice Cream Firm.
Now have a Residential Fridge and no issues with Ice Cream.

Always place ice cream directly on bottom floor of freezer. Never had soft ice cream when stored that way.

We have a Norcold model 1012 4 door and we’re with the “keep ice cream in the lower left” crowd ;~)

I've been making Ice Cream for over 35+ years. Ice cream will start to soften a about 5 degrees and you usually can scoop it around +-8 degrees F. I've asked this question here before as my refrigerator is 32 degrees and the freezer is 8-10 degrees F. There is no adjustment to lower the freezer temp only. I was told to live with it. I would check the door seals. Stick a dollar bill all the way around the door between the seals and the freezer itself. Assure that there is the same resistance all the way around and if not adjust the door. Frost in the freezer is also an indication that the door needs to be adjusted tighter.

How do I adjust the freezer door? I'm fairly handy with the tools, but adjusting the door is new to me.

My doors didn't need to be adjusted so I never did it. I would start with the book and go from there. I'm sure the make and model will have different procedures.
