Tire Questions
Have read all the tire threads and still have many questions. My new 2011 Montana 3150RL came with Chinese GY Marathons ST235/80/16E and has 6000lb axels.
Questions:
1. Has anyone with newer Marathon tires on say a 2010 or newer Montana had any problems?
2. Has anyone switched out the Marathons for other tires? What brand and size?
3. Where are the new GY 614s made? China? would someone with these tires look at the code and determine country of origin?
4. Thinking of switching out my Marathons while they are new for the Michilin XPS RIb in LT235/85R/16LRE. Has anyone with these Michilin XPS RIBs EVER had any problems (blowouts etc.)?
5. Anyone interested in my takeoff marathons?
Any advice is welcomed.
Chuck

My Goodyear G614's clearly state "Made in USA". After checking Art's website for where they were made, they were made in Topeka, KA in 2 week of 2010.

Chuck,
with the Goodyear G614's the best tire with G rating and a search for price, it would seem, imho, you'd be better off with them than Michelin's. Just not sure if your rims are suited for 110PSI rating that the 614's require. It seems I've read that 614's are under 300 per tire and not sure about the Michelin being that much cheaper and rated E instead?? Hope this helps.

Everybody just keeps messing around with tires, Been there, done that!!!
Just go and get Goodyear G614.
They are G rated and are built like a heavy truck tire.
It has a over the road truck type thread, which dissipate the heat a lot better.
Yes, they are a 110 psi rated tire, your rims should be rated for them, just check.
Check around for prices, should be able to get then for 275 max 300, mounted and balanced.
Make sure that they change the valve stems to 110 psi, mine were special ordered because the outer nut was too large to fit into the rim.
Find a Goodyear store or a Goodyear dealer (I go to one that does heavy truck tires)
Just my thoughts!

In April we had five (5) Goodyear G614RST tires installed on our Montana at a tire store in Temecula, CA. We paid a total of $1334.54 including CA sales tax, disposal fee for the old tires, mounting, balancing, etc. Then we mailed in the rebate form to Goodyear and got a $50 check back. I don't know if the rebate is still on but I think it's until end of July.
Total cost after rebate was $1284.54, including tax. That is $256.91 per tire, total. I think a couple of members have even beat that price. I post this just to point out it is possible to get these tires for well under the $300 per tire I keep reading about.

i have a 2010 and the gy marathons were made in china. i got a flat but didn't know it. when i pulled into a gas station, the front tire was gone except for two strips of rubber around the rim. the rear was nearly flat and the tread was separating.

Sheepdog, here is my take on the Chinese GY's. I have a 2009 2980RL with a dry weight of 11,400. I try to keep my weight under 13k depending if I fill the FW tank or not. I have GY Marathons with manuf dates of 47,48 and 49 weeks of 2007. Last year we brought the trailer home from Ohio where we purchased the trailer and the drove 17,000 miles on the Alaskan highway, Top of the world Highway, Klondike Highway and the Cassiar Highway. We saw some assortment of roads before we got back to Houston. I have not had a flat, blowout or any tire problems as of yet. I am seeing wear on the tires of course but still lots of tread. I figure I have about 23,000 miles on these tires. I keep them inflated to 80 psi and have a tps installed because I ran Carlisle's on my last trailer and couldn't travel 250 miles without a blowout.
I don't like Chinese crap any better than the rest, but so far so good.
What are the manuf dates on your tires and where are you located? How much are you asking for your tires?

Had a quote for 987( 4 tires ) from Sam's club ,but that was about six months ago, naturally I have waited until now, and the price has went up about 30 per tire, still under 300 per tire after everything taxes, mounting etc, but not by much, but the rebate is still good if purchased by the end of June, and sent in by the end of July.

Believe it or not we do have friends.
Last year some friends from Maine with a SOB, that is heavy, had a blow out with a Goodyear G614, they were over 5 years old.
Anyways, "they were in the middle of know where" when it happened.
They went to a tires shop and they said that they wanted to change all 4 plus the spare.
Waitiig 2 days for the tires to come in and over $2,000.00, yes over $400.00 per tire, they were stuck and knew the tires were expensive.
They got safely to there final destination and the local Goodyear Dealer was selling the G614 for around $275.00, total $1375.00
Anyways they were bull s_ _ t, called the garage where the bought the tires, and they said that is the cost of doing business, when you stuck.
So anyways, my advice, even though you didn't ask, is buy the tires, don't put it off.

Well thanks for all the help. Decided to go with the Goodyear G614s and will be getting them from local GY truck tire dealership. He had 3 in stock and will get me 2 more by Wednesday.
My takeoff GY Marathons have Indiana to Pitt, PA miles plus about 30 that I put on. Three of them have 47/09 mfg dates; one 40/09 and one 50/09. Anyone interested in them send me a PM, asking $75 each which is about 1/2 of what they sell for I think, or make me an offer. Thanks again.

From everything I've heard, you (and we) made a good decision. We've only put 942 miles on our new G614's so I'm not qualified to say they've been as good as I expect them to be but I can say I'm a whole lot less worried about potential tire failure while towing than I was just 943 miles ago. Actually, it was about 35 miles prior to that when we blew out yet another Chinese tire, resulting in..

We've only put 2,000 miles in 3 months on our G614's and we have never regretted getting them. No more will I buy cheap tires and worry about my RV being damaged by a shredded tire.

Steve,
Not to change the subject.
When did the blow out and major damage occur.
I consider us very lucky, when our same tire blew out, going 62 mph and a hell of a bang, all it did was rip a little of the black cover and damaged the outside fender skirt.
If I may ask what was the estimate for repairs?
Is the 90 degree elbow and fitting in the front of the picture the gas line to the refrigerator?
If that had gotten ripped off, then BOMB, that would of sucked!!
I am sorry if I get on a soap box about tires, I feel the G614's are the way to go.
And yes there could be a blow out with a G614 from a loss of air, but most likely not from blowing out a side wall.

Sven, that blowout pictured occurred on April 2, 2010, on Interstate 8 in San Diego, CA, just east of the Waring Rd exit. At that point there are 5 lanes of traffic (this is in town) and the debris was spread across all five lanes. Shortly after we pulled over a CHP officer stopped and pulled all the debris off the road. He had far more guts than I do. Thankfully we had been in the right lane (our exit was coming up) and there were no accidents because of the debris.

I have priced a set of the Goodyears at a SAM'S club in Bellmead Tx. @ $806.00 for a set of 4 mounted & balanced. They were out at the time but was told they sell lots of this tire, must be a good one.

Just paid $290 each for 5 tires, mounted, balanced, and metal stems. This was in Chesterfield, NH. I shopped around a lot but in the end I settled with the company that had people who seemed to know what they were talking about. And oh by the way, they had a shop that was easily accessible to my rig.
I ran into shops that claimed there was no such tire, or that I should go with a cheaper one, or they'd have to order and couldn't give me a price, whatever. More excuses than fact. Cheaper isn't always better.
Mine are made in USA date code 2310.

I have had Mechilen XPS on three trailers for a total of 70,000 miles. I never had a flat or blowout in all them miles. I am sold on them we have been in summer heat of the desert and took a trip to Alaska.
