bike rack stability
Our new Monty came with a bike rack on the back. It's like a shelf that folds down and has a pole you swing up to fasten bikes to. I am sure you can carry a bunch of other stuff on it as well.
We notice that the part (shelf) that folds up moves front to back easily while folded up and would do so in transit. Has anyone devised a good way to fasten this down so it stays put? It stays up, it just wobbles front to back a few inches.

That is an interesting back shelf! Our old Monty did not have that--I put our Thule bike rack on the front of my truck--works great--I can clearly see the road and the bikes. Not a lot of movement. I leave it in the front even when not towing to haul our bike around for rides.

We have been putting the bikes in the back of the pickup. One of the perks of an 8' box. We just thought since this thing is hanging off the back of the trailer we would use it instead. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of play in it.

Same here, pad them well and put them in the back of the truck. As most know, the ride in any pull behind trailer gets rougher the farther back you go....so the worst place for bikes is on the back.

Which makes me wonder why they put that thing there.

My 2010 Montana came with a 1 1/2 receiver and I put a Swagman 2 bike carrier on the back. Works great. Been across U.S. from Mesa to to North Carolina over all kind of roads and never a problem. My trailer is 35 1/2 long so it is somewhat shorter than a lot of the newer Montana's. Also went to Mesa from Eugene Oregon for 5 yrs with no problems from bikes being on the back.

I also have a swagman for 2 bicycles and I secure them real well and use an aluminum clamp from one bike to the ladder. Never had a problem but of course can see back there. No damage to trailer or bikes.
