New GMC Sierra

Well, Christmas came a bit early this year. Got a good deal, and now have a new 2015 GMC K3500 Sierra SLT, Duramax/Allison, 4X4, one ton, double cab, (modern version of "extended cab") and all the bells and whistles, etc. Color is stealth grey metallic. Main reason we got the new rig is our 2008 GMC one ton has been a great truck. But, with the newer 3725 Monty, found that the 2008 was right at maximum load. The new rigs have been improved with more capacity, which now gives us some "room" on the weight issue. Yes, it is a SRW, but it's also a daily driver, so that entered into the decision. One thing I know I will love is the exhaust brake. One thing I won't love is the "new" DEF system. Oh well, give and take. It's still at the dealers being "tricked out" adding side steps (nerf bars) spray on bedliner, and mudflaps, for starters. Then to get the hitch installed. Guess I'll have to put a bow on it for Christmas day!

Hi. That is a nice truck. I just upgraded to a 3500 SRW 2015 crew cab, long bed duramax also. Ltz.
Last truck was a 06 Chevy duramax 2500.
Just did first trip from Syracuse, n.y. to Hilton Head for thanksgiving. 4*4 is noisy. Everything else was great.

You'll love the truck. Plenty of power and ease of operation. Don't worry too much about the DEF. It is more common to find the product sold at the fuel island right near the diesel. Enjoy the ride!!

Merry Christmas! We also bought our present last week. Whichever brand, they are a whole new class of truck compared to the previous generations. It brought a smile to my face when I towed and felt the trans and exhaust brake actually working in tandem. No way the 05 Ram could compete even with my aftermarket exhaust brake.

Congrats on that Grabowski Motor Company truck (actually there never was) but old Max Grabowski would be proud!

Had a 2003 HD2500 crew long bed with the Duramax/ Allie combo before Bigboomer and loved it!

Sold my 2011 D/A Chevy 3500 LTZ 4X4 SRW back to the dealer where I bought it because my drop foot made it impossible to drive safely, but I sure liked that truck. I broke even on the deal.

Congrats!

Just picked up my new one also - 2015 Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab SWD Standard bed. The 'ol '04 Silverado was a GOOD truck, but I was pushing the envelope where weight is concerned. Will wring out the new one in a few weeks on the out to AZ...

Merry Christmas! Just wait till you use that exhaust brake! You will not need to use the pedal very hard because, it will bring you right down and you won't hear a thing! At least, that's the way my Denali is. On the other side, you will also notice that it does indeed have the 765 foot pounds of torque. Sure love mine!!

You will come to love the DEF system when you realize that is what enabled them to lean out the fuel mixture so you will probably see around 22 MPG on the highway when not pulling the Monty. It's really not that much of a hassle once you get used to it.

Is the DEF filler still under the hood on the Passenger side?? Sure makes it awkward when fueling, have to pump your fuel first, then back up a little to reach across the Duramx to hit the filler.

Hmmm, last year when we went to California (mostly empty, no trailer) it was averaging 22-23 MPG most of the time. The 2008 was always good on mileage. Hope the new one is too.

Yes, it is still under the hood on the passenger's side. Being new to the DEF, I'll have to get used to it.

Dirty Dog??? Jealousy is such an ugly thing.....
Someday you too can have one. All you have to do is go beat up a dealer a little bit. The hardest thing was finding the "double cab" that I wanted. If you are ever in the Portland (OR) area, look us up. Clams, eh? I'm a shrimp man myself.....!

My 2014 seems to get slightly better mileage than the old 2005 Silverado I had. Back in May we took the Denali to Destin, FL. There was 4 of us in the cab and the bed was packed with luggage and a bunch of other house hold stuff brother-in-law wanted to take to the house on Miramar Beach. We set the cruise at 75 mph and still got just under 21 mpg! That engine torque with the 6th gear in the tyranny work very well together. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I was.

I've had a fairly rapid learning curve with the DEF system. First thing I figured out was the dealer did not fill it when I picked up the truck because I was running out at 3K miles. The tank will actually hold around 6 gallons, but if you live in a place that see's below freezing temps, you should not put more than around gallons in to allow for expansion should it get cold enough to freeze. Depending on types of driving and driving style, one tank of DEF should get you around 8K miles. DEF also has a shelf life. To prevent getting old, and thus bad DEF, get it from some place that has a rapid turnover, such as a truck stop. Some bigger truck stops sell it in bulk and offer it a lot cheaper than what you can buy the prepackaged stuff for.

Your truck comes with a 2 year / 24,000 mile maintenance program that will pay for up to 4 oil changes, chassis lube, tire rotation and DEF fill up. There has been a lot of confusion at the dealers about the DEF fill up. Some dealers think it's not covered, and some only add a gallon or two. The truth is the dealer is supposed to fill it to the recommended maximum.

Chalk up another one for GM and the BEST trucks on the market. We have a 2013 Silverado, 2500, Diesel but it is a 4X4 so the mileage is a little less. Just got back from a hunting trip and averaged between 19-20 MPG. We were also carrying about 1,000 pounds of hunting gear. Pulls our 2013 3750FL Montana just fine. And it always does my heart good to see the Dodge's and Ford's pulled over on Interstate 10 with their hoods open!
