F350 Cruise Control

Doing some 7% grades getting close to Yellowstone I noticed something weird about my cruise control. This grade was 6 miles long and restricted to 25mph so I tried 2nd gear with cruise. Cruise wouldn't work. I just thought my cruise went out. Later we had stopped at a rest area and after taking off I tried the cruise again and it worked the rest of the day. Never tried it again in 2nd gear but was wondering if it just won't work unless you are in 3rd gear or higher.

Probably speed sensitive. I have a Chevy and the cruise doesn't engage below a certain speed which I believe to be 45 mph.

I think the Fords won't work below 35.

You are correct. I think the 2012 Fords are speed sensitive below 30mph. I probably misquoted myself in the original post. The posted restriction was 25mph but when I tried setting the cruise I was at about 34 or 35mph.

It's probably not good to use CC at low speeds in the mountains. It is speed limited. Use tow haul and foot power to control accel/decel.

If I am hooked up I am always in tow/haul mode. I have found that 6% grades and less (up or down) I do much better letting cruise take over as long as I am setting it around 50mph or below. It seems that anything steeper the cruise doesn't want to hold going downhill so I don't use it.

From what I have read Ford systems are designed to operate at speed from 30-125 mph.

I don't operate mine while towing unless long straight highways. I like the feel of controlling throttle myself. Traffic etc can cause me to loose focus, and my Ford makes mountains etc easy to climb. Not sure I would ever use cruise control at lower speeds. Just my way I guess?

When going down grades at slow speed, I put the trans in 'M' which is manual shifting and use the toggle on the gear shift lever to select the appropriate gear. If you have the FX package you also have hill descent control for traveling under 20 MPH.

We didn't get M toggle on our 08s but 120 mph with speed control. I might haft to start using that.

Well, I got new tires recently, so I guess I could fudge up near 120...

on my 08 F250 6.4, cruise control is not available when Tow/Haul is enabled.

On my 350 Ford and my new Dodge, CC was not able to work in speeds of less than 35 mph, which.... I never used at that slow of a speed. I like to control the RPM's an Gears when I'm going up any 6 % or higher % grade. if left in CC going up High % grades the engine can run hotter along with the transmission heat going higher. I have found that a higher RPM put less load on the transmission keeping it cooler. you might loose your mileage a bit, but that's cheaper than a transmission or engine problems.

My 2008 F250 6.4L is long gone but I remember using cruise control and tow haul frequently. I do a commute up and down I-5 and that is my normal mode.

Bad news for all of you who wonted to pull your campers at 120. I think these Ford trucks defuel at about 103. Yes I know bumer. My truck is tuned so it doesn't defuel but 120 is too fast even for me.

Wow! I have the same year and same engine, and CC always works with tow/haul. I think you need to see the dealer...

Dang! I just signed a new life insurance policy, and it won't let me go over 100! Guess I'll never know.
