Best 5th wheel hitch for 2006 gmc crew cab Duramax
Santa gave us our first diesel tow vehicle - 2006 GMC Duramax crew cab with Dr
DRW and 8' bed so time to select the hitch. It came with an Orchard gooseneck hitch that I had planned on removing. Montana is 2011 3400RL so wondering about size, ease of installation etc. any suggestions as to brand specifics would be greatly appreciated.

Any properly installed Reese, Drawtite, or similar hitch rated at 20,000 lbs (my desire over 15,000 lbs) will be adequate. However, if you're going to travel a lot, say full time, you might consider the TrailerSaver air ride hitch manufactured by Hensley. We've had one for over eight years now and it sure has made traveling a lot more comfortable. We don't experience the pounding that you feel going down the road with the normal hitch. The TrailerSaver is expensive but so is the structure of your Montana. This hitch will provide a lot of protection against structural damage which may occur to the RV.

Great tow truck, in fact I think it and the 2007 DA are the best stock tow truck ever built.
I like the BW companion hitch. There are so many good choices, pay your money take your pick. You probably can't go wrong.

I echo Mlh has said but I like my Reese a lot. Never a problem with hitching up, look at Sig.

We like the Pullrite Super 5th with a GlideRide Pinbox in our 2007 GMC 3500 DRW which we took out of our 2006 GMC 3500 SRW. And, when we ordered our Big Sky with MorRyde, we tried it and then wanted our old Pinbox (the GlideRide) installed.

We have the 5th Airborne pin hitch and the new Curt 20K hitch. The hitch is a great unit for the price for sure. As others have stated if your traveling a lot then get an air ride hitch or pin box. I am no expert as to which one is better. The air ride pin box or the air ride hitch. One way to look at it though is if you bought the air ride hitch its good for all 5th wheels, where the pin box is more specific.

I have been very happy with my 20.5K Super 5th by Pullrite. Prior to this hitch, I had a shortbed and ran the Superglide by Pullrite. Both hitches have served me well. I really like the auto locking feature that Pullrite offers as that lets me know I have a good secure connection to the coach.

X2 on the Curt 20K. It's sturdy, easy to use, and has the dual pivoting head. Will mount on Reese rails.

My hitch is rated higher than the fifth wheel tow rating of the TV (15,000 lbs). Even though my Monty has a GVWR of 14,040 and it currently weighs 13,500 I wanted to ensure that the hitch met the TV's rating so that as long as I'm towing anything within the TV's rating, I would not have an issue. Others mentioned a 20K hitch. Those are good options, too. As far as the hitch, if I could do it again, I would get the B&W or any hitch that does not leave bed rails in place.

I just bought a new TV,2011 Chevy 3500 D/A 8' bed,And I am going to put in the B&W Companion-I have seen this hitch recommended over and over again on many forums.Good luck with your choice.

What I like most about our Reese Signature Series is when the hitch is removed (takes less than two minutes) there are no rails left in the bed of the truck (see below).

I have a B&W Companion and I am very happy with it. It is rated at 18,000. I had a Reese at one time & it did a good job also. Never a problem with ether. With the Companion I have a clean bed when it is removed (no rails) I can also use a turn over ball for a goose-neck.

I just bought a new 5th wheel this spring, so spent some time researching hitches. The B+W Companion appears to me to be the consensus favorite on this site, and others. I haven't read a bad thing about it anywhere. American made, no rails, easy removal. And now, apparently, there is a slider option, so maybe that's the way to go. It's all good. I didn't buy one, no particular reason, but I'm happy with the one I did buy. Since this is my first 5th wheel, I'm not as experienced as the others chiming in. Like Bill Parcells once said, "I don't know what I don't know".
