Water ... Water ... pipe us some water
Here's a couple of photos of a nearby lake ... over 8' low. The courtesy dock at one ramp is sitting on the sand ... the other is a shot of the little woman standing on dry ground where about 5' of water is usually present. This lake supplies quite a bit of water to Wichita ... perhaps we need to space out our showers and drink more adult beverage ... HA!

Worse part is there's no serious rain in the forecast and the lakes around here look very much like that. Here at Council Grove the swimming beach is on dry land and only the mud where it's supposed to be over my head is left with any water on it. What really hurts is what's happening with the ponds used to water cattle and folks wells. Several farmers have already got track hoes and bobcats working to make ponds deeper for next year because they don't have to worry about sinking in. The ponds are bone dry. There are also a number of rural families hauling water because their wells have run dry.

We're bringing in a track hoe here in Nebraska at the farm to dig our pond deeper in the summer pasture on the Platte River bottomland. It's where our stock cattle are. We still have some water in the pond but not a whole lot. The Platte is so low that they are driving across it with four wheelers and near Fremont the water is low enough to see the old wooden piers that are from the old wooden bridge that ran across the Platte many years back. Most of the Platte is nothing but sandbar.
The hometown fire chief and my brother were both on one of the loxcal TV stations tonight and they were talking how they were going to handle harvest because the corn fields are so dry. The fire chief said they have asked the forestry department for more trucks with water tanks on them incase they have to fight field fires. They have several trucks to control or eliminate a fire but not enough if a cornfield catches fire! Once one would start, it would catch the adjoining fields too. Please help us out and put us in your prayers for some rain here. The last measurable amount was back in June!

Y'all are getting the weather we had last summer, no rain to speak of for 10 months, half the state on fire, and 83 straight days of temps over 100 deg. Even now we still have a lot of trees dying because of the lack of water last year. The 2 oaks in my front yard are hanging in there but do look sad compared to previous years. We are now once again headed for a drought since it's been a good while since we have had rain. Hoping that that hurricane heads into the gulf and straight up to Texas, just without the wind and floods.

Saw your brother on TV. He didn't say how much corn he was going to get per acre. Some have told us none or maybe 1/4 of usual. Some Beans have no beans on the plants.

Worst part Dave is that we did have this same weather last year. We're now on two in a row. We did get rain in the spring each year, but this summers even worse than last and last summer was a disaster.

Maybe you will get enough snow this winter to make up for it. Like many skiers say, "pray for snow". I know where I'll be.

Praying for rain for ALL! Last # I saw said 80% of us are in drought conditions. We have soy already turning yellow, not because it is time to harvest, but, because it is dry. Field corn, pathetic looking. And, we have had a bit more rain in some spots and only 3 to 4 days of 100+ temps. Tis bad everywhere, praying for ALL!

jsmitfl ... Climate has been changing in the plains states ... if you had a snow plow business in Kansas last winter ... you probably never got a call all winter long. In the past 3 winters in the Wichita area ... I can count the times I got the snow blower out on one hand.

Pulled the Monty along Hwy 50 from Emporia to Strong City today and saw two fields where they had round baled the beans. Left enough for the crop insurance guy but the rest was baled. Never saw that before.
