I leave both on and check every few days. After a while you will get a sense of how much propane you use and the frequency. I hate to run out (usually o'dark 30) and then have to wait for the new tank to refill the lines.
Checking the propane status is just like checking the level of the black tank, the level of grey/shower tank,, fuel in the vehicle, tire pressure, open/closed windows, quantity of beer in the cooler, etc. which one needs to do periodically.

Both on all the time check them every 4 or 5 days more when it's cooled out and I have a spare on hand!

We have always left both tanks open as that is the purpose auto changeover. We have not run out of propane since 2006.

To the original problem - I had a similar issue. Neither tank worked. I had just filled one of them. After much reading, I took off the newly filled tank, turned it on it's side and dropped it 6 inches or so. Then did the same while upright (or upside down - can't remember). When I put it back on I 'slowly' opened the valve. It worked. So apparently the internal safety valve had stuck.

I enjoy staying in a camper with out heat at night and getting up to go turkey hunting early in the morning. I’ve done it as low as 13 degrees. You come back get warm eat breakfast and take a nice nap and by then the day has got warm.
Ah nice!
