Another Marathon Delamination Story

Here at N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Rally and guess what? Some of our MOC friends looked at our tires and two of them are defective. We bought our 2012, 3700RL in December. Can't make it home to Florida, and had to find some where to get new G614 Goodyear tires. Found a Camping World in S. Myrtle Beach that can install 5 for $2,022. Can anyone tell us if that is a good price? I would like to shove these Marathon tires down Keystones throat. We have to work with a local Goodyear tire rep. @843-626-7402 to find out if Goodyear will make an adjustment for our Marathons. Does anyone know of someone that can possibly help in this matter? Thanks for your help. Terry & Claudia

Been there done that, just bought 5 G614s myself $1625 from my local dealer up here in N.J ( $325 each) Had the same thing side wall defects, went back in forth with dealer then back in forth with Goodyear , Emails , pictures, tire ID #s blah blah blah. Finely got sick of all the Bull. Bit the bullet, bought the tires, thru out the MaraBOMBS and forgot about it, Now I'm a happy camper who tells everybody who I can at every trailer show I go too, to not buy Keystone trailers unless they upgrade the tires. One time I hung out by the Montana dealer in the Rockland County RV show for over 2 hours telling everybody about the tires. Pay a little now, or pay alot later.. If you have MaraBOMB tires GET RID OF THEM!

Seems high to me... I would say should be more around $1800 for five installed. Unless that includes tax, then you're in the ballpark.

I too upgraded to the 614's but refused to pay $300 for a spare to sit and dry rot. Bought a same size BFG Commercial TA for $125 to sit and dry rot.

We just priced them last week because we had the TA recall and was going to go to the G14's. Same price you got. We went with the Michelin XR's they where a free exchange. We where happy with our TA's. At least when they had a problem they exchanged them free of charge and had the professionalism to call them back. It stinks but well worth your life. There are other options that are lower in price.

If you're going to get an adjustment from Goodyear, particularly on the "good" tires you will have to deal with a Goodyear dealer. I'd ask Goodyear to supply a list of local dealers and check with them. Prices vary around the country, but that's way too high for around here.

My research before buying led me to SAM's for the lowest price of 614's. Next was GY dealer and of course CW was WAY HIGH.

We got ours at SAMS but a few years ago. We also found a better price at a Goodyear Commercial Tire Dealer rather than a standard dealer....You might try that. I paid, I think, $234 each for mine. I know you won't get that price now..They have become too popular.....

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
When mine blew, I contacted Goodyear and told them that I was putting another brand on the rig. They crdeitted me for the damaged Marathons and the damage to the trailer.

We appreciate everybody's advice and have contacted Blacks tire in Myrtle Beach. We were very happy to find that the out the door price was $1,652 vs $2,022 from CW. Still planning to pursue Goodyear's customer service about these sorry tires. We will feel much safer once they are off this Monty. Terry & Claudia

Took our Monty to Black's tire in N. Myrtle Beach this morning and they were really nice to us. Had 5 new G614RST put on originally they said it would cost $1,800. After Goodyear called the Customer Service Dept in regards to our claim they would only give us 100% towards the two bad tires. Nothing towards the other 3 tires that we were replacing. Then my husband called them and had a few choice words with them about these sorry tires. They came back and gave us 100% off the two bad one's and 50% off the other three. Brought pur price down to $1,100 out the door. Feeling so much better about our trip back home to Florida. Good luck to everyone out there with this same problem. Claudia

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal at the end of the day. Just too bad we have to fight so hard just to get these Marathons replaced.

Glad it worked out well for you. I may have to ask you to negotiate for me the next time I need tires!

Today we had our first Marathon blowout and I will be replacing all tires and contacting Goodyear. I see you have a 3750FL like we do. Did you have any clearance issues with the G rated tires and did you have to change the rims to accommodate the 110 psi tires?

thanks,

Hey Rich,

Sorry about the blowout. Contact Goodyear before you purchase to see if they'll give you a credit toward new tires.

No clearance issues with the Goodyear G614 85's in place of the Marathons which are 80's - they're just slightly taller (G614s).

Your rims should be okay. Stamped on inside side of the rim should be "110 psi" or "3750 pounds" and all of the newer trailers should have them. Either just crawl underneath and use a flashlight, or compare them to the wheels on the tredit site and match them up:

http://www.tredittire.com/Aluminum-Wheels-C10.aspx

Good luck!

Thanks so much for replying so quickly with such good info. I just checked my rim with half of a tire on it and it is stamped 110 psi and 3750 on the back so I have the right rims for the G rated 614 rated. I will check the others tomorrow to assure they all have the same stamp.

I will post how I make out with the new tires.

My pleasure. Also, keep in mind even though the G614's are rated for 110 psi, you don't have to run them at that. This is where an inflation guide is used. Based on my weight, I run mine at 95 psi, as do a lot of others on the forum here. Still plenty of air to support the weight, and a little softer ride than at full 110.

One other thing to check when you get your new tires, whatever they are. Make sure the tires are fresh. Check the date, on G614's its on the inside of the tire so it's best to check before they install them. Trailer tires wear out due to age not mileage (except for Marathons where you usually don't have to worry about age) so you want to have tires that are relatively new. The reason I mention this is that I've heard of problems from dealers, but when Keystone put the Marathons on my rig they were already a year old so I was even happier when I got rid of them.

I have been wondering about these Goodyear Marathons on our trailer, and have been thinking of putting on the 14ply tire. We have about 7000 miles on the trailer at this point consider me lucky. When we ordered the trailer I wanted the 14ply, CW said it couldn't be done, later I found out from someone else that ordered a Montana, non Big Sky that it could as he did, oh well..Happy Campin.............Ron

Hey Ron, welcome to the forum. Some guys were upgrading them at the dealer level once in a while. But now, sometime after the first of the year, they did make it a stand-alone option at the time of order. We ordered our trailer the end of March and they were available but the dealer "forgot" to order them so we had to do it at the dealer level but it was possible to make it a factory order.
