It is all in the name

The Grand Canyon. That says it all and yet, it fails to describe the awesome expanse. If you are not phobic about heights, to walk up to the edge and look down is breathtaking. We did a guided tour and let someone else do the driving, so we got to see more than the normal tourist trap. We were picked up at our campground in Williams and chauffeured to GC, escorted to interesting photo opportunities, all with a running dialog of a mixture of science, history and mythology, an entertaining day.

The Canyon Gateway RV Park at Williams, AZ is adequate. Passport America rates are good for a 4-day stay. That is long enough.

Tomorrow, we are off to Sedona to see what we can see. Then we will travel to Camp Lutherwood at Long Valley Junction, UT and use it as a base for visiting Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.

Glad to hear you had a great experience. We were there a couple of years ago. It is an amazing, inspiring place. Anyone who describes it as 'hole in the ground' has never seen it!!! Happy travels.

All I can say is "ditto" to what Stiles posted. Marge and I were on the same tour and enjoyed every breath taking moment. Being on this guided tour, to me, was the only way to go. We viewed the Canyon from viewpoints that the average tourist doesn't see.

We were at the Canyon in 1967 but I didn't recognize anything but the Canyon. It seems to me that we drove up next to the South Rim and took pictures. Now, there are buildings where everyone gets off their bus, goes near the edge and takes pictures. They should see the pictures we got.

Great trip..Helen loved Sedona. I did not feel any Mystic forces. It was hot and all the rock formations looked like...rock formations. We took pictures.. They still looked like rock formations..Beautiful country.

Stiles: Sedona isn't RV friendly. Find a campgroung (we stayed at Dead Horse State Park), (I think that was the name) south of Sedona and went back into town. Watch the hill going down into Sedona as it is quite a ride. You are doing the trip we did a few years ago. We hit Vegas (stayed at Circus, Circus) on the way up to The valley of fire, bryce and zion.

If you dont like high elevations stay away from Jerome...DW still has nightmares about that trip..even the dog kissed the ground when we got to the bottom....Sedona is similar to being at the bottom of the canyon looking up..its crowded and in some spots narrow...can get real busy at times..

It is most certainly "grand" and on my list of places to see again.
Years ago I was in Phoenix on an extended business trip. With nothing to do on the weekend, I planned to go to the canyon then. But on Friday it snowed 19" in Flagstaff and I pretty much ruled it out. But Saturday broke clear as a bell. I figured they had the equipment to clear the roads, so Sunday I went.
Well after a white knuckle trip over the hump at Flagstaff, the roads were completely dry right up to the park gate. Then a fresh layer of several inches of snow in the park. Weather was beautiful, clear and about 40 degrees and absolutely no wind. The snow had scared most everyone from coming. So I drove the west rim drive and at almost every overlook, I was the only human there. And very few human prints in the snow. With no wind and the crisp clear air, it was so quiet, you could actually hear the river at some overlooks.
A once in a lifetime experience unless you live nearby.

Yes the Grand Canyon should be seen by everyone if possible. As you say, it has to be experienced on site. We stayed in Williams(which I loved) and took the train up.

Mary and I were out that way 2005. We stayed at a KOA north of Williams, it was not the best of places. Took the train to the canyon from Williams, what a ride. We also did the sunset jeep tour a day or so later. We headed on south, staying at a great place in Camp Verdi, Distant Drums; about 50 miles south of Sedona. Thanks for bringing this up the memories of this trip is aways fun to visit.

We saw the Grand Canyon about 3 years ago - stayed at the RV park by the station that has a package deal to take the train up. When we visited Sedona we stayed at Distant Drums RV park in Camp Verde. Not a bad drive to Sedona, Jerome, and points of interest in the area. The Verde Canyon rail trip was interesting/and also the African wildlife park just out of Camp Verde.
