Improving your trap door support.

A while back I read a post where someone's hinges had let go on the trap door and on inspecting mine I noticed the left hand side of the opening had no support for the trap door. The right hand side did and the front has too, but both sides must support the door or else the hinges are bearing more weight that a hinge like that was made for.

Check this out by stepping on both sides of the door. If you have an unsupported edge you will feel the deflection. Some models may need support on both sides. It just depends on the workmanship because the door is made to be supported on both sides and if your install is done right, it will be.

Anyway I found an easy fix was to drill a piece of aluminum channel and drill and screw it on to the aluminum floor joist. Just use good self tapping screws and the right size drill bit. Here is a picture of my fix.

I have edited this post to say that 90% of the workmanship on this 06 2955RL is excellent and certainly better than all the other RVs I have owned in the last 30 years. Working on an RV is a hobby for me and I love trying to improve my RVs so this is my favorite forum.

Don,
Your ability to come up with and apply solutions amazes me. I have added your fix to my list of things to check out when the rv comes out of its winter sleep. Thanks for the heads up...

Don, thanks for the post. I checked mine and ,as it turns out, it is ok as is. Your fix, however, will be a great help to those who have the problem. Ideas like this are why I read this forum.

We're not having a problem with that door but our early 2003 model has a shoe locker at the step up from bath area to bed area. We're seeing some flex in that door. So I'm going to take a good look to see if I can implement a similar fix to that door. Thanks for the idea.
