3400RL Queen bed question ??

Our 2005 3400RL (not the 1/2 year version) came with an RV sized queen bed which looked like a combo box spring and mattress. Initially we thought it was just an uncomfortable bed, could feel the springs even though it is padded, but are now wondering if perhaps the mattress had been removed by the dealer. Our solution was to put a 3 inch pad on and it is somewhat comfortable.
Some fellow RV's at a CG showed us their 3400 (the 1/2 year version) and they had the King bed with mattress and box spring.
Before I contact the dealer (700 miles away), I'm curious to know what type of beds configurations other 3400 owners have, ie, both spring and matress, combo spring and mattress ??

thanks, jerry

We replaced the mattress that came with the Monty with our good almost new queen mattress we had bought for our previous 5er. I haven't seen too many RV's with good mattresses. Ours is a regular queen size (not the short one that comes with Monty) so we just have to lift it up and lay on dresser when the slide comes in,
Happy trails..................

Our 2005 3400RL came with the usual blue flowered mattress which we exchanged for the mattress we had made for our Mountaineer. Sold the extra mattress in a garage sale.

Well now I am beginning to wonder if we got the king size that we ordered? We got that funny blue flowered one. And I mean one. No boxspring. Just the top mattress.....?????It ceases to amaze me about the quality that we ended up paying for.....It sleeps nice, but for how long, before it goes flat? Kathi

Measure your mattress. A queen size is 60 by 80 but in the 3400 (early 05) it is a short queen so probably about 60 x 76.
Happy trails.....................

I don't think any RV mattress is that great. We have had a number of units , travel trailer, and 5ers and all seem equally un comfortable. We have solved the problem by going to a air type system like the Select Comfort sleep 3 type. There a number of similar matress on the market that are very good and come in RV sizes. ( ours is not a selct comfort but similar). I would suggest going to a search engine and type in " air mattress" or "air beds" Ours is a 10 inch RV queen and fits directly on the ply wood pedestial. No foundation is required as long as you have a plywood base. All the 5vers I have seen are the same and would not need the foundation like you would house at home in your stick house. Hope this helps. Plus this helps on the pin wt ( well maybe just a little)

We found a Simmons queen size pillow top mattress on sale for under $200. It hangs over the bed frame on the end about 4 inches but still clears the dresser when the slide is in. VERY comfortable. We still have the memory foam topper that we put over the rv mattress in our old trailer but don't need it with this mattress. The original mattress in our 3280RL was a typical 4" thick rv type but this new one is a real (not RV type) mattress about 8" thick with the pillow top. Best investment we have made on the Monty so far, other than the two new rocker recliners. They are VERY comfortable also!

Many mattress-specific stores will custom cut to the size you desire. We had ours cut to two inches longer than the original RV mattress and it remains flat with slides in. We could have gone another inch, maybe two, had we realized it. It's a house type mattress. There was no charge for the custom size.

We ended up putting the memory foam topper that Camper World sells (with membership and sale it was about $81.00 with free shipping) and we're in the process of determining how much we like it. So far we're impressed. You've seen the ads, the material conforms to your body and then reshapes back to it's original size after you move off of it. It was originally designed for NASA astronauts so they would have more comfort at liftoff.

Wayne and Cathy, I'd appreciate hearing how you like the memory foam when you decide. We bought ours at Target after first ordering one online, then returning it. Well, first we got a Queen sized memory foam, 1 1/2 inch, from Target. It was way too narrow for the bed so we returned it. We ordered a 3 inch memory foam from overstock.com online. It was still a bit narrow but not as bad as Target's. But the 3 inches was too much for my back. It might be great for someone else. We returned that one for credit and then went to Target and bought the King sized memory foam and cut it down to fit our mattress. It's 1 1/2 inches. So far I like it although after a couple of weeks I'm still having some lower back pain. But it is definitely better.

Sue; We haven't really had any repairs done yet. We bought the Monty at the Colton Mike Thompsons RV dealer. There info is Washington St. Exit off 91-215 Fwy. in Colton. 902 RV Center Dr. #6-9, their # is 909-825-2433. We are going to take it in for all the repairs when we get back from vacation. That will be at the end of this week. We were really happy with them when the lock on the door broke and you couldn't get in or out. We just hitched it up and took it to them and they fixed it right on the spot. That was nice. Now as for the W/D combo we waited for 2 months but I don't know who's fault that was. By the way my mattress is 72 wide X 75 long, does that sound right? Kathi

Kathi - is yours a King? It sounds like a short Cal King. A regular King is 76x80, regular queen 60x80 and Cal King is either 70x82 or 72x84.

Yes that is what we ordered was a King....Not sure now just what we have but it isn't a King because Pauls feet hang over the end of the bed. We ordered the King because of that very reason. His back is really bothering him with this mattress so I guess we will have to go to something with a pillow top or some of that memory foam....Kathi

That is why we replaced the bed in our other unit - my back was killing me sleeping on the cheap mattress. The new one was worth every penny we paid. The $80,000+ units have good mattresses but our mattress sure didn't cost $30,000! Let us know how your repairs come out when you get back home.
Happy trails......................
