5th Wheel Hitch

Hi All,

We are picking up our brand new Montana tomorrow (3650RK) hurray! We can't wait to get it and look forward to many happy years of fifth wheeling. So far, it seems like everyone enjoys the Montana, so count in another Montana user!

I have a question and would appreciate any help. The dealership wants to install a Reese 15K sliding hitch, $700 installed. Does this seem like a good price? They mentioned I could upgrade to a 16K sliding hitch for $200 more, which gives me a four way tilt. Is this worth the $200 or not? Is it necessary?

Thanks for your help!

I am surprised that someone has not already replied to your question. Yes, in my opinion the 4 way tilt is much
better. And you would get the feeling of safety too. Going with a 16k hitch gives you the greater safety. We even went with a 18k Reese hitch to get the greater safety. Now saying that, I am sure the 15k hitch will do ok with your Montana/Mountaineer. The 4-way tilt will tilt your RV the direction that your truck is leaning, therefore not putting the pin in a bind when unhitching it.
Too bad you don't live near VA, we have a 15k hitch for $100.00 and a 20k hitch for $250.00. The latter came off our old truck.

Definitely get one with the tilt, if not when one side of the trailer is up on more than 4" of blocks the rear tires of the truck will have to go on blocks to un-hitch and hook-up again.

We were in a site in Gettysburg that the trailer was level from side to side and the spot where the truck wasn't, the hitch was tilted all the way to one side when hooked up. Trying to block the truck tires would be a PITA.

Diffently get the 4-way Reese. The trailer and truck will not always be on the same plane.
The hitch is the only thing connecting you with alot of weight and money so you want the best.

I agree with the 4-way. We've had both 2 and 4 way. With the 2-way there will be times you'll have to put boards under at least the rear wheel of the truck to get the hitch to release because the truck and fiver are on different planes by more than an inch or two. Then, of course, that board under the truck wheel gets moved before you are ready to hitch up again and you can have a devil of a time getting the board in the right place. You think you have the hitched lined up with the pin, then back up on that board and the pin is no longer centered with the hitch (truck moved in an arc). So bring it off the board, move the board, etc. With a 4-way you may still have to do that but not until the difference if four or five inches. Much more rare.

As for 15k or 16k, the 15k is plenty. That's what we use. But I'd go for the 16k so if you ever trade FW's you have a bit more breathing room. And for $200 I'd definitely go 4-way.

All just my opinion.

Here's a situation where we also had to put boards under the truck wheel despite the 4-way. Hitching up was NOT fun!

They should give you the 16k for less than $700. The 15 should be about 525.

Take a look at the B&W companion hitch. A little more $ but you end up with no rails in the bed when you remove the hitch. It is a 4 way rated at 33K. Also you never have to worry about being locked up. No droping of the 5er on the bed rails. Just my thoughts.

If you have a short bed truck ABSOLUTELY go with the sliding hitch. Or upgrade to the super slide hitch. Otherwise truck and trailer damage can happen when the two collide in sharp turns.

If you can budget the money, the SuperGlide is the best way to go IMHO. You'll never have to worry about whether you should slide the rig back or not, it does it automatically. We've (meaning me!) been in several situations where sliding the hitch back would have been difficult or impossible and the SuperGlide just did its thing. I highly recommend it and I know Glenn and Lorraine feel the same way.

The $700 includes the price of the Kwik Slide unit, right? In that case the price probably isn't far off, in my opinion. You might be able to haggle a bit but probably not a lot. It's a popular hitch.

$700 is about what we paid for ours installed just a couple of months ago. We checked around and that was the goin rate around here. It is a 15K 4way Reese from Master Hitch

As you can see we don't have a 5er BUT one of our camping friends just bought a new 5er(not a Montana) and pulls it with a F-150 club cab with a 5ft box! He has a super slider and I can't believe how great it works! It was a bit expensive but compared to the damage possible woth other hitchs the cost was well worth the peace of mind. Get the super slider!!!!!!!

It has already been well stated, but with a shortbed truck, I think the only way to go is the PullRite SuperGlide. It is definitely much more expensive than what you are considering, but it is simply the best and worth every penny. It earned its keep the very first time we brought the Montana home!
