RV Storage

For the first time since we have owned our RV we will be storing it for a couple of months this summer.

Does anyone have any tips prior to storing it?

We have the option of outside with no power hookup or covered with enough power to keep the battery juiced.

Any information would be helpful.

Go with the power hook-up, will save a lot of headache with batteries.

We keep ours in covered, but not enclosed, storage with power. Being in TX and our hot hot summer sun, preferred to have it covered. Otherwise, I don't do any thing special except remove everything from fridge and turn it off, make sure water heater electric is off, and propane tank valves closed.

Disconnect a battery terminal no need to keep battery on charge for that short of period of time.

Inside with power. I would drain hot water tank and not leave food inside for mice.

I always clear out fridge and leave doors open so it doesn't mold up

Storing with power just to keep the battery up is a waste in my opinion. Ours is stored outside with no cover just because inside storage in this area has become far too expensive for a 9 year old unit. I have left the battery in but unhooked through an entire winter and it still has enough juice to retract the landing gear when I pick it up in the spring. We keep a stocking filled with charcoal briquettes hanging inside the unit as someone convinced me it helps control moisture. We also leave the roof vents open in the summer and partially open in the winter. As boat391 already states, leave the fridge and freezer doors open. Jim

We are in the Tampa Fl area. We have had both covered and uncovered storage. Pros for uncovered are cost...at least 50% savings. Cons, however, have made us under cover storers! Unmerciful sun beating down is a biggy when you pay as much as we did for our rig. Bugs; we got infested with ants in an uncovered grass lot storage situation. No power and no water made maintenance hard. Ability to turn on the AC from time to time to eliminate mold and mildew. Cover also keeps rain off my head when loading or unloading for a trip.

We are leaving our Montana for 5 weeks starting Father's Day weekend. I realize that really isn't long term storage. We are simply going to disconnect from city water, turn the airs up to 78 degrees, and turn the hot water heater off. Thought about pulling it from out site and putting it on a storage lot for $40.00 a month, but I would rather pay $325 a month and keep everything up and running in the hot weather.

One small tip is to make sure your toilet has plenty of water in it, especially in the dry heated summer months, so it won't evaporate, dry out, and ruin the seal.

Covered with power is the best situation. If really hot, even covered, I'd get a half dozen heavy duty gallon jugs (like RV anti freeze comes in), cut the top off, fill them with water and scatter them around the RV. That will keep some moisture in there when it gets really hot.

I would suggest the covered storage if the price difference isn't too high.

Water jugs inside? In the southwest perhaps but not in the south east! You would have mold and mildew big time on every surface! Yikes!

Been doing water jugs for years on different rigs. Never had any mold...and never had any wood dry out and crack.
