Butch,
If it kicked off, it saved you. You are right, it should be a mandatory first option for everyone. You only need to get hit once to be a believer and then it's too late.

Amen to that Jim - and thanks for showing me your set up. Though I went a slightly different route, I figured if an expert thinks he needs the protection, I'd be wise to pony up the dollars for it too!

I didn't till I got whacked in Nashville campground, everything got fried and it cut my trip short.Fortunately I had insurance with a $500.00 deductible. The bill was a little over $3000.00 and alot of grief.I have a hard wired 50 amp surge guard now.

Related this in a post back when it happened but will sumarize here. Had the cheapy 50 Amp surge protector (no cord, just plug into the pedastal and your cord into it). Second trip out it shorted with an open nuetral. Lost the converter, 1/2 time oven, front TV and power supply for an alarm clock and surge protected extention cord. Keystone covered all under warranty (THANKS AGAIN ARAM!)and surge guard folks made me a good deal on the portable 50 Amp surge guard.

Would it be right to say that I would need a 50A hardwired surge guard since my new Monty is wired for 50A. I don't think I will be adding a second AC so would a 30A work? I'm confused.

Mike, I would go with the 50-amp if I were going to do it. If you use a 30-amp surge guard, then it would never do you any good to plug into a campground's 50-amp power because automatically you would only be getting 30 amps to the coach circuits. Don't short yourself on power just because right now you don't think you'll need it. It's not worth trying to save the money.

I agree with Orv. Your rig is designed for 50 amps and you would be limiting yourself to only 30 all the time. Go with the 50 amp.
