Diesel Fuel Additives?
Hello All,
Looking for thoughts and recommendations for what you use, if any, additives to your diesel fuel.
Since the fuel can absorb water, be in a emulsion state, that the filter can not separate out, what works to separate the water out?
My truck, like my pusher, sits for months sometimes with out being started. In my '96 pusher, that CAT would run on about anything, but this '12 Cummins, with all the emission stuff is a bit more picky.

I've got an 11 model and don't add anything. Since we travel with our Prius the truck sits idle for months at a time. I do run it occasional just to keep everything in operating shape, but we don't really drive it.

I use Power Service Diesel Kleen as a fuel treatment. I use nothing specifically for water.

The one that was recommended to me by several shops and mechanics is called "Sea Foam" diesel, gas, and engine treatment. It's been around for a long time, sold in virtually all stores, and from the diesel forums seems to be one of the more popular and better rated ones. I don't use it all the time, basically at a fuel filter change, and also if I THINK I might have gotten some questionable fuel.

If it's going to sit for a long time, add a biocide. It will keep stuff from growing in the fuel and plugging filters.

Yep Read the Owners manual first like Tom said,alot of these new rigs do not even need additive too often ,I use Opti-lube or Diesel_Kleen EVERY tankfull because I have a LB7 Duramax with known injector issues

This subject is like "what oil is best?"
You'll get a LOT of different answers.
Personally, after having my turbo soot up, my mechanic advised to use a cetane additive at every fill up. I use Diesel Kleen year round and no further problems. YMMV.

I agree totally with the above, but TomS has a valid point also, and that is to read the owners manual to see if it references anything about additives when letting it sit for long periods of time.
Our last boat had two 150 gallon diesel tanks. We stored it for 5 months at a time. I always made sure the tanks were 7/8 full and used a additive, which I can't recall right now what it was. It was an additive that specifically prevented stuff from growing in the diesel tank. In addition I changed my fuel filters more often.
Of course now I don't have to worry about it because I have the enjoyment of purchasing diesel about every week!

One very important thing, if it's going to sit for a while "Make sure the Tank is Full" especially with large temperature swings. Those temp swings can cause condensation in the tank.

Sea foam works too good takes all the oil lubs off the rings and piston walls be careful

I agree with reading the manual. However, most manuals do not really address fuel issues. When they talk about "additives" they are refering to additives that affect driving and the actual running of the engine, like PS Diesel Kleen. Biocides are used when fuel is stored and have nothing to do with running the engine...other than keeping the fuel in a condition so it will run the engine.

Yesterday 12/23/2014 I got into this issue with the manufacturer of a new Diesel that we were having the first major service performed by the dealer.
The manufacturer’s field representative stated they don’t recommend fuel additives unless we are having water contamination problems. They recommend a biocide / water suspension additive like Biobor under these conditions. They cautioned about following the instructions from the product manufacturer. More is not better some additives in larger quantities than recommended can damage the engine.
