Brake Alarm
I had a TRAILER FAULT alarm on my built in trailer brake controller in my F350. Had the truck checked out, I checked out the trailer as much as I could. I'm somewhat limited as we are travelling and of course some otherwise usefull stuff is at home.
Truck checked out fine and they found the code C2808 meaning the fault, a short, most likely was in the trailer plus they had the brake oontroller tester and checked function.
As a pretrip test I usually use the controller slider switch to apply full brake and then step on the throttle to raise the engine to about 12-1,300 rpm. There will be a little movement untill the brakes hold and then no creep after.
Of course with the fault there was continual creep, to much.
To cut it short I had read this before on the MOC so I went with it.
Some of the wiring is run through the axle tubes and has been found to wear the insulation while driving. I pulled the wires out and ran them through electrical PVC conduit which I strapped to the outside. Reconnected the brakes and went out for a test run this AM.
No alarms and no creep when I did the pull test and the brakes work.
So if you do get a fault and the controller checks out ok then consider that through the axle wiring as a potential problem.
I did inspect the wire but could not find a worn spot. All it would take is a pinhole from a rust spike or rough patch to penetrate and there would be a fault and the hole would be almost impossible to find.
Thank You MOC or I would not have done it first, rather somewhere down the road.
