Fuel Mileage

Just bought a new 06 f350 DRW p.s. c.c. 4x2 with 4:10 axle and 13,000 GVWR. Was wondering if anyone has this set up and what kind of fuel mileage were you getting. Anxious to pull with verses my 99 f250 to see diffirence.

We average 11 with 3.73 axle towing about the same weight, maybe a little bit more. Supposedly the 6.0 gets better mileage than the 7.3 if you listen to the Ford people but that's not what I'm seeing.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I have the same truck as Steve R and would agree with him. 11 Mpg Average. I think I did a lot
better with My 99 7.3. I have a friend that likes the V10. He has had 3 or 4 of them and this
last one ( 2006) has had the worst mileage by far.

I also have the 06 V10. Avg was under just under 9 mpg towing 12,000. Installed an Air Aid permanent air filter. K & N also now have a replacement for the 06. We'll see if that makes a difference. There is also a vortex spacer available for the intake. They whoever they are say it improves efficiency and increases mileage and horsepower. Curious to talk to someone who may have installed on their v10.

FYI, Ford now distributes a Cetane booster for the diesels. Seems to have boosted me up about two MPG, from 10 to 12 MPG. 2006 6.0L, F350 King Ranch, dually diesel, LWB pulling a 2004 3400RL.

My 05 V-10 will average anywhere from 8 to 11 towing the 3400. I have seen 7's and I have seen 11's depending on the terrain.Just returned from a 500 mile trip down Ohio I-71, south and I-75 West to around Springfield, Ohio Some moderate grades..The truck computer is reading 9.1 as we speak for the return trip That's only 2 or 3 less than the average diesel. If the new diesels do better we will have one.Don't do much no towing driving buit 12.5's to 14's are not uncommom. The diesels do a lot better in that department.

Fuel mileage has a lot to do with the type of driver and weather and mainly fuel. In the colder months you get a winter blend which is #2 and #1 mixed so as not to gel as diesel will do. In the summer they have #2 which will also give you better mileage. For diesels thats why fuel mileage goes down in the winter. Also the brand of both gas and fuel are different. Diesel fuel brands like B-P, Shell are better than others because of different additives that have been added. The worst diesel seems to be [where else] in Texas. and other points in the south. Gas is the same way, and gasohol will not give you the same mileage as strait gas. Brands here also are different. The company's add different additives when they put the fuel in the truck to deliver it. Also now with diesel having to go 15 parts per million the price of diesel is going up and fuel mileage going down. Some will not agree with me but research it and see for your self.

I'm getting 12.8 to 13 MPG pulling a late 2006 3400 on interstates in Western WA and OR with a 2003 F250 4WD SD SC LB Lariat 3.73 7.3L Diesel. Have never averaged less than 12 even when mountain passes were part of the trip.

I had a 2000 model 7.3 L with a full up Banks package that got 13.9 mpg on the average pulling our 2005 3400 RL. I bought the 2005 truck purely for the crew cab and 6.0L engine/tranny improvements and get about 11 mpg if lucky. I have put a cold air intake and will add a monster exhaust from Banks to help; I do not expect it to increase too much. The improvements in fuel milage are not really there as I thought they would be. Don't get me wrong, I love the truck and the fact that I get a lot of the same performance without the aftermarket add-ons, but the old truck was a really great truck but just needed four doors.

No mileage info on the window sticker for our '06, so I asked the salesman - he said not to expect better mileage with the 6.0. He was right!

May need to break it in a little, but best unloaded highway is 16, and 11 towing.

We have a Superchip on our 2001 F250 diesel. We average with all driving, 2/3 of it pulling the trailer, 14+ mpg. The other 1/3 is city driving. Most of the driving with the trailer involves mountain passes here in Oregon.

Roy, you're going to make me cry again! I miss my 2001 7.3 every once in a while.

Other than gas prices it's still better than the old days when -
You were speeding going 60 mph.
At 70 mph you were red-lined with 4:10 gears and 3 speed automatic.
If you didn't burn premium gas your truck would knock when towing.
You had two saddle tanks and one in the bed just to go 400 miles at 6 mpg.
A head wind or the air conditioning would take your mileage to 4 mpg in a hurry.
No heated seats.

I know my ford Dealer has been doing test on the quality of diesel fuel over the past 6-7 years and says it is slowly getting worse and worse every year. I know when I first bought my '00 7.3 diesel it would get 22-24 mpg empty all day long going to and from work. Then it slowly got worse and worse until I traded it off for the '04 6.0 and it never got better than 16 driving the same roads. Now the new '06 has 4.10 gears and 2 extra tires and I get 16 with it already and it isn't even broke in yet. Hope to give it a real test pulling to the Rally this fall. On short trips of 200-250 miles we have seen about 11mpg pulling the 3685.

I am not sure how long it takes to break the 6.0L in. I have over 30K on my 2005 and it is not getting any better. My old 7.3L at 25K started getting in the low 20's just driving to and from work or on the interstate unloaded. I'll bet I am at the best it is going to get.

I know speed has a lot to do with it as well. I can putter around the 2 lanes in the mountains and show an average of 20 mpg or better (old 7.3L), then slip onto the interstate at 75 mph and watch the average drop down to 16 mpg or so by the time I got home.

Drastic change in mileage on my old gas burners when they raised the speed limits to 75 mph from 55 mph not so long ago.
