Converter is going bad

Recently upgraded the batteries from 2 12 volt to 4 6volt batteries for a future project to add 2000 watt inverter. A few days later I’m hearing a whistling sound from the converter and with a volt meter, there’s no dc power going to the batteries for charging. Batteries are connected correctly with dc output at 12.50 volts. So, my question is, 6 volt batteries have a higher amperage, did that possibly cause the problem or was it just a coincidence?

Thanks
Tom

We had six golf cart batteries in our old rig with no problems. That said some of the older montana's may not have converters compatable with some types of AGM batteries.

As you just changed batteries, I suggest you test the Reverse Polarity fuses in the converter. It could be they have blown. The Montana supplied converter is fine for 6V and 12V batteries.

Not sure what model or year rig you have or what converter or power center you have, but if by chance your converter is one of the ones described in this trouble shooting guide, I would follow all the procedures before replacing what may be a good converter. Also, I believe these converters are designed for all wet cell batteries, including AGM batteries without any modification and if gel cell batteries are used, a jumper installed in the circuit board is all that is needed for them.

just purchased 2-Trojan 6-v T-105 AGM and Dealer techs have 4-5 different opinions on whether my original converter is the proper unit for theses batts. Am I good to go as is or do I need another converter.....just want to make sure.
Thanks for advice.

PS. you just can't get good help anymore (dealer techs).

AGM is basically the same chemistry as flooded cells. So if wired properly the standard Converter will work. The only wild card may be the age of your converter. You can verify it by looking it up in your manual. My manual for my converter clearly states it supports AGM batteries

Mine is a 2015, seems like it should be new enough. Will check manual. Was very confused when talking to techs and they all had different opinions AND one said he had been there 17 yrs. and he said "no, would not work....I think". Kinda scary dropping off rig there with all these opinions floating around. But they have done other repairs for me with no issues. So just wanted reassurance from some of you guys who have been there done that. Thanks. I'll check manual or get model # and look it up. I know I have read where many of us have done this 2-12v swap to 2-6v AGM with no issues.
