Wally Receiver

I use Dish Network with the Wally receiver and a Dish Tailgater antenna. I want to add a hard drive to the Wally for Dvring some tv for late night viewing after the DW calls it a night. Has anyone done this and is it a complicated to set up and use. Any information would be appreciated. I’m not a techie, but I’m not tech illiterate. Thanks in advance.

Not complicated at all. However you still cannot watch one channel and record another. It will allow you to record the channel you are on and to pause live TV. If you want to watch another channel while recording something you will need a Hopper.

Check the Dish website for a list of supported HDD's. You can also Google search for the information. The only gotcha is getting a hdd that you are attempting to power from the usb port. This can create issues depending upon how much power your usb port delivers vs. the hdd power requirements.

I just upgraded from VIP211K to Wally. I had external hard drive on VIP, moved it to Wally, which re-formatted it.

On eithe receiver, I was always able to watch a recorded show while recording another. On both , I was also able to add the local over-the -air channels from antenna into channel guide. I could watch a local while recording satellite. In fact, I,could be watching a recorded show while simultaneously recording one satellite channel and one over-the-air channel.

You da Man. The receiver / antenna / HDD add on thing is crazy to sort out. I am looking to get Dish because of the "Pay as you GO" RV option. I definitely want to record one channel and watch a different one. Possibly even add a receiver in the bedroom for DW at night. Need to do some more investigating. Just call me Sherlock.

What does everyone use for a dish - the manual dish or auto unit like the tailgater? It the auto find worth the money?

I like DirecTV better, but AT&T screwed that up!

All of the "dome" dishes can only see one satellite at a time. If you have 2 receivers, they both must be tuned to channels that are on the same satellite. The more expensive "exposed dish" antennas would allow multiple satellite viewing at the same time. Also, fixed s&b dish can be used for multiple viewing.

IMHO, aiming is a PITA. Would only go for dish that can find satellites on its own.

I may be totally off base here so take this with a BIG salt block but the way I read the advertisement, the newest Tailgater Pro - not the tailgater but the Pro, is able to see more than one satellite at a time. Might want to check with Dish.

Steve, that is why I dumped Directv when AT&T bought them. Heck they can’t run a phone company let alone a satellite TV company.

This is from their website: Supports multiple TV viewing (requires two receivers; programming must be on the same satellite)

Appears the same as the previous Tailgater.
