Brake issues on 2005 Mountaineer 5th wheel

Have a Prodigy controller on my 05 Dodge. Everything worked good for 4 years and then recently the trailer brakes start to activate then I get an OL reading and no brakes. Then maybe next time I do. It appears the harder I depress the pedal the more likely I will not have brakes.

Any idea where I would start looking.

Thanks
Ray

First place I would start is by calling Tekonsha, the makers of Prodigy. There's a good chance they can tell the exact problem.

OL is the code for overload. It's possible that maybe you have wires pinched, but definitely this is a wiring problem. I found this on etrailer. This is a link about this http://www.etrailer.com/question-17749.html

I've had brake problems in the past. So far it's been in the wiring. I'd start by checking the male and female plugs. If it's not there then check the wires under your trailer near the axels. Good luck.

That break controller has a good rep. Though it doesn't sound like a controller issue,Your local dealer will be able to bench test it for you.
Good luck!

Process of elimination the right rear is the problem. All wiring and connections seem to be OK. Can the magnet work sometimes and not work other times?

Thanks

Ray, No the magnet usually works or does not. I'll pull wheel and drum and look for a worn wire inside the drum area or the wire inside the axle is shorting to ground.

The magnet moves inside the drum and it is not unusual for the magnet wire to become worn or frayed. There is a clip that holds the wire in place and it can wear thru the wire on the magnet bracket.

Check the wires in the axles - wires bounce around in there and short to ground giving an OL fault. Had it happen on 2 trailers after about 10 years. This is a common problem.
When you see the fault try to pull over at that point. If the fault clears by moving the wires in the axles then this is your problem. Replace wires in axle. I wire tied new ones on top of axle both times. No problems since.

jlb27537, you hit the nail on the head. It was the clip closest to the magnet and it still was not visible until I too the clip off the wire.

CountryGuy, did you use cable ties to hold the wire in place ?

Again thanks to all. I discounted and reconnected LF, RF, LR and then even removed the wire from the axle before I removed the hub.

Luckily we live on a dirt road and very few neighbors so all the testing I did was easy. It never once shorted out when it was sitting still. It had to be rolling and warm/hot surfaces.

Don't have much hair left but I was about to pull out what was left.

Again thank you

Ray, when I re-wired my axles, I used 12/2 stranded wire that is used for heavy duty extension cords or on something like a skill saw. Sold by the foot @ Lowes, etc. Ask for "SO" type wire.

I soldered all ends and used heat shrink. Ran the wire across the axle tube and secured with plastic tye straps. Use black straps. Will not become brittle like white ones will.

Glad you found it. Now go to the other 3 wheels and inspect them for fraying. One was worn thru, and you probably have another one that is getting ready to wear thru.

jlb27537, thank you. We are leaving next week for the Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield Ca. to celebrate my sisters 77th birthday. When we return I will do my yearly bearing repack prior to our annual trip to visit friends in Irwin Idaho.

Again, thanks to all for the input.

RonD, you might have missed my earlier post. I found the short. It was under the wire clip nearest the magnet.

Thank You
