US54 in New Mexico

We wonder about US 54 from Alamogordo, NM north to I 40 at Santa Rosa, NM- Our atlas showed part of road was improved in 09- We are aware of a mountain pass but it should not be a problem- Anyone go this route recently? All replies appreciated and THANX in advance for your input- Don

It's a good 2 lane highway for the most part. It does get a little winding in places and usually has a lot of semi traffic. The deer get pretty thick after dark between Corona and the Vaughan turn off. The mountain pass isn't much more than a hill.

Don,
We have towed that road several times and like it. We drove it last Sept. and there was some construction but nothing bad, no detours.

Be sure to check out the Valley of Fires and the Three Rivers Petroglyphs. Both have camping.

We just pulled into Oliver Lee State Park yesterday, just off US54 south of Alamogordo. She tells me we'll be here through the week-end, so drop on by and see us. The park is beautiful!
