New member & new to 5th Wheel Camping

Hello my name is Doug, my wife Beverly l and I recently bought our first Heavy-Duty truck & 5th wheel camper. Our rig is 2016 Cummins powered Ram 2500 SLT Bighorn Crewcab & a used 2007 Montana 3500RL camper. We are excited to say the least. Been doing maintenance & minor repairs on our new to us Montana. Trying to get it back in great shape. It was more or less a rescue job previous owner developed health issues and could no longer keep up the camper. It did not get winterized and of course we had some plumbing woes to overcome plus a lot of cleaning and minor repairs to do. We actually bought way more camper than we set out to being our first 5th wheel purchase but we got the 3500RL at such a great price we couldn't pass on it. We've made four short camping trips very close to home so far to our county park/camp ground to learn and practice hooking up towing & set up and take down and to hunt for things needing attention that we may have missed. So far we seem to have all the major issues resolved. Still need to work on the potable water tank as it's still a bit hinky looking. Any suggestions for cleaning out potable water tank that appears may have had an algae bloom would be appreciated. Thought about a doing couple of rinses with some water and white vinegar mixed in the tank and tow it around so it gets to slosh around good then drain and rinse. Hope to meet some of you in our travels.

Welcome to the Montana club Doug and Beverly. I had the same algae problem in my 02 Montana at one time. I ended up filling the fresh water tank with a strong mixture of water and bleach and letting it sit for a day or two. I also ran some of the water through all of the lines and let it stay there for a day. After a couple of flush and fill, the water cleared up. You can use the water to flush the toilet and it helps to clean the black and galley tanks also. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you too.

Yup Bleach will defiantly clean the tank. Its what they use on swimming pools to clan them. like Larry ans Steph said make sure you run some of that through the water lines and sterilize them also. You will be able to smell when you have removed all of the bleach. Not sure the mix but 1/2 gallon of bleach to about 10 gallons of water should do the trick. You dont need to worry about the black tank. Just drop one of those sewer pellets in there and that stuff will eat anything. Hope you have many years of enjoyment from your rig.

Welcome! You may want to consider attending the rally in Indiana in September. We are going for the first time this year. Apparently you can learn a lot there, as well as meet lots of new friends.
