One Ring Phone Scam

Just in case you haven't watched the news lately there is what is called a One Ring scam going around. These calls originate over seas. What happens is your CELL phone will ring once.
When you go to your phone and see that you missed a call but don't know the number, DON'T call the number back. This is what they want you to do is call back.
If you call back to see who called you will be billed $19.95 and $9.00 per min. Some of the area code's being used are 809--876--284--473--268.
It has already happened in the valley. so if you don't know the number that called you, DON"T call it back.
This was on CBS 5 news here in phoenix or you can google one ring phone scam to find out more.

I think various carriers have different rates for over sea phone calls. I think Verizon charges $1.95 a minute with no charge for less than 30 seconds. I think I heard this scam going on for many years. My advice is, if you don't recognize a phone number, don't call

I had a 268 call this week. It did only ring once and I had two missed calls with that prefix show up. I always figure if someone calls and I miss the call and I do not know who the number belongs to, they will call back if they really want me. Joe

Hi

I check the area code on the internet before calling back. I do this because I manage some very expensive vehicles for overseas clients. A client that owns an 8 Million dollar vehicle will commonly not call back they expect you to be sitting on the phone waiting for their call. LOL

Don't recognize a phone number? You can always Google it. I do it all the time. You should too!

That "scam" has been around for a long time and has many variations none of which are true. It is however good practice to not return a call if you do not recognize the number.

A friend of mine received two calls a few minutes apart yesterday morning around 4:30am and the area codes were 473 and 268.

She called me a couple of hours later and asked if I could tell where they originated from. Easy to do, just Google the phone number in this format: xxx-xxx-xxxx.

473 was from Grenada and 268 was from Antigua. I always check at least 5 sites to get a good handle on what I'm researching.

The sites I looked at had many people reporting those and a few other area codes as one or two ring callers. When people called them back, they have reported a multitude of scams. You just won't know which scam it is unless you call them back.

By no means is this list complete, but a few other international area codes that are reported to be associated with a high amount of various phone scams originate from:

876 (Jamaica)
809 (the Dominican Republic)
375 (Belarus)
371 (Latvia)
284 (the British Virgin Islands)

If a call is important, the caller will leave a message or let it ring longer, don't ya think?

We just never answer a phone call from a number we don't recognize. If it's important they can leave a voice mail and we will call back. As Rainer says, you can always use Google to find if the number is a known scam. We got a 268 call on Friday. When we Googled it, we found that it was a Miami based outfit that offers to transfer your credit card balance to a new card at a lower rate. What they really do is max out your card for drug money.

So many scams it's hard to know the truth! Why just the other day, I almost missed out on assisting someone in "India", getting money released from a large bank. Can you believe this? The bank would not let this poor guy, get to his own money, unless it was released to a third party, twice removed in the US? I offered to help him for free, but he insisted to share, after I put up only $478.00 US! I will share half of the $30.5 million with Punja, pretty sweet!!! So in a few days my bank account will be pretty fat, and just to think, I almost missed out because of so many "non legitimate " scams out there!

I read this post a couple of days ago and yesterday I received a one ring call on my cell. I checked the site "WHO CALLS ME" and it appears that some of these one ringers are the same scammers who have called my home phone. They are now in my BLOCKED CALL list!!! Thank you for the heads up!!!!
