Refrigerator Problem

Our [s]waterheater[/s] refrigerator has the Dometic retrofit/band-aid flame sheild installed. Basically the entire apparatus has been sealed off by rather flimsy (and sharp) sheet metal in such a way that there appears to be no way to get at the gas orifice and burner. The problem is that it runs for about 20 minutes and goes out.

The normal thing to do when it won't stay lit is to clean the burner, run a wire through the orifice to remove the spiderweb, and check the thermocouple. I suspect the burner first because it's been necessary to run it at a higher and higher setting to remain cool.

How the heck do you even get to those things now? I guess I could check the Dometic web site but I'm in a place with very limited bandwidth and that will probably take hours.

On edit: My DW has agreed to review everything I type here from now on.......[s][/s]

I did it!

It's possible to get at the orifice, ignitor and burner tube but you have to bend some of the flimsy sheet metal to do it. I found a spider web in the orifice and the burner tube had about a teaspoon of rust in it, probably from the flue. Guitar strings make great orifice cleaning tools! Getting at the flue may be more difficult.

No blood was lost in the process! A rare thing for working around sheetmetal.

Dometic was no help. According to their website the model I have does not exist. Apparently their website was made in the same place as their (flimsy and mutiply recalled) products. (Not impressed, does it show?)

Muddypaws are you talking the WH or the refig. It has to be the refrig. Mine busted about a yr after the recall was done. I had to put a new cooling unit in it.

Yes, I meant the refrigerator. It looks like my keyboard is messed up too.

The waterheater is easy to work on by comparison.
