Self adjusting brakes

I have a 2010 Montana model 3150. How can I tell if my brakes are self adjusting without physically looking at brake assembly? Thanks

Actually that's a great question! I wouldn't believe any brochure, salesman or sales document. They've all been known to be wrong (and some just plain lie). This requires jacking the frame, removing the wheel and removing the drum - this is oversimplified and more work than I described for EACH wheel, which is why you are asking your question.

I think you're just gonna have to look, or to answer your question, have someone else look . I recall a post somewhere that an owner found he had a mixed bag. One axle had them, one axle didn't because when he had an axle problem and the axle assembly was replaced with a system that did not have adjustable brakes and only checked when he had a tire problem. I hope I'm getting the story right, but the point is I don't know any other way to know unless you take each wheel off and look. Don't believe anyone or any piece of paper.

Anyway, that's what I would do. I hope someone else has an easier way to tell that includes ACTUAL verification at the brake. FYI - This does not apply to disc brakes, only drum brakes.

While I am unable to find the posting, someone from the Fall Rally wrote the self-adjusting brakes have a different adjustment hole configuration (on the backing plate). Hopefully they will see this and refresh our collective minds. It is a quick way to determine the existence of self-adjusters.

The self adjusters have two adjustment holes on the back plate, and they are side by side. The adjustable brakes have only one. Also if you pull one of the rubber plugs out of the adjustment holes you will see a yellow spring...

I just installed Dexter self-Adjusting brakes. They have yellow springs and have 2 adjustment holes on the backing plate.

Wow... that was real easy. I have only one hole for my brakes, therefore it matches that I do not have self-adjusting brakes.

I appreciate the tip! Thanks, Dave!!!

Don't be totally mis-lead. Just saw a complete replacement assy, non-self adjusting and it had two holes side by side. My guess is that Dexter is now using a common backing plate (save a few bucks) for both self and non adj brakes. Probably the only sure way is pulling a wheel. I got the surprise that I do have self adjusters.

Thanks for all the responses!! Lets see if I have this right--If I only have one adjustment hole for sure I do not have self adjusting brakes--If I have two holes I may or may not have them. Guess this means I had better look no matter what. Great forum. Thanks again.
