Tow vehicle purchase - 2016 Ram 3500

We are looking at a 2016 Ram 3500 4x4 diesel long bed ( max pin weight 4,430 lbs.; max towing weight 16,960 lbs.) for our tow vehicle. Our fiver is a 2014 Montana 3582 RL with a Manufacturer's Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) of 12,800 lbs., and a hitch weight of 2,490 lbs. Will this this truck be adequate for the job?

Hey John if you have the time get touch with Vernon auto group in Vernon Tx. Could save you a chunk of money on a Ram. I live in NC and it sure saved me money compared to the east coast. They have a great web site.

i would say it is over kill. if you use the truck for more than pulling a trailer, I'd go with a single rear tire, any one of the one tons would be great.

John, the truck described is a single wheel 3500. Figure 23% of trailer gross will be on the pin. That figures out to 3680lbs. My little 3150RL will run close to 3500lbs of pin weight.(brochure weight on mine is 2410lbs)

The single wheel 3500 is almost 10K short of what a 3500 DRW is rated for. Also a single wheel axle ratio is 3.42. Only one available. You got to go DRW to get either a 3.73 or 4.10.

Yea you can tow it, but the DRW option is only $1200 window sticker price, will be money you wished you spent. If you will only be in Fl or such, probably get by with it, but go out west in the mountains and cross winds, a 3.73 DRW will look pretty good.

Jim

I have the same rig only mine is a 2015. I know I am close on the pin weight but I am careful about what I have in the basement and bedroom. I live in Arazona and travel the country. See my map. I have no problems with mountains or wind. That said I will not go out in high winds and a head wind kills my MPH. But my F350 SRW pulls it just fine.

Make sure you get the Aisin tranny as well. And you will really be happy.

Well ended up with the Ram Tradesman with the Aisin Transmission, I hope it works as well as they say it does. Thanks everyone for all of your input

Can't believe the 4000+ pin weight on one rear axle. With driver, passengers, fuel, hitch, stuff....and 4300 lb of pin weight....that doesn't exceed Max payload?

My brother just bought a 2016 crewcab, dually 3500 Dodge and says it has lots of power and it is a beautiful truck. He had a 2002 F-350 crew cab SRW.

Excellent choice, I have a 2016 3500 short box for my 2016 monty. I would suggest adding Air Lift bags. While I am well within the limits, and you will be too, it has some squat. I added the Air Lift airbags and a wireless compressor for like $500, took me a couple of hours to install, now when I hook up, I hit a memory button on my wireless compressor remote, pumps those up to 90 PSI, and man, the truck and camper are perfectly level and the ride is awesome.
