Ford Got this one right

Dropping from 8700 ft to 4600 ft in 17 miles can be a steep grade experience. Using Ford's "Tow/Haul" made it easy. I seldom had to touch the brakes on the entire descent. No need for an exhaust brake. Quite different from the 2002 F250 (my last TV) with just an overdrive on/off setting.

That feature really helped me one day during the ice storm. I had to drive a lot on that particular day and I couldn’t avoid it. I had the hubs locked in and used the Tow/Haul mode which made it so much better while driving. With caution I rarely had to use the brakes.

Thumbs up to Ford on that one!

Yes, the Tow-Haul mode is GREAT! Initially I was concerned on how well it would work--No worry it works like a champ.

Stiles, you are right--that tow/haul feature is great. We also have an '08 F350--same color as yours, in fact. We call that color "Burnt Orange," as in the University of Texas burnt orange!

Sweet, isn't it, Stiles!? Our Fords performed the same as yours. This Dodge came with both tow/haul and an exhaust brake as standard equipment. Now, if the downgrade is no more than 6% and if I'm using tow/haul and the exhaust brake, I have to give it some throttle or we slow down too much. Above 6% doesn't present that problem. You're right, though, in my opinion with a good tow/haul there is no real need for an exhaust brake.

Stiles,
You are correct, the Ford tranny is great. The only thing I don't like about it is, having the synthetic fluid changed every 30K miles. It takes quite a few pieces of gold to get it done.

Bill, just curious, why did you have the hubs locked in? Was it so you would get the tow/haul "braking effect" on the front wheels also, since I suspect you were running in 4wd on that ice?

I’m not sure I understand everything I know about how the 4-wheel drive works on this Ford. However, I believe that if I had used the 4-wheel drive while the hubs were in the Automatic position, it might only engage when ever I hit a slick spot. It was snowing that morning when I left and the roads hadn’t been plowed. There was about 6” of snow already on the ground and I wanted it to stay engaged. I’m not certain that the Tow/Haul mode was designed to be used with the 4-wheel drive but it really seemed to work that day. I was also driving with extra caution due to so much ice.

Thanks Bill, I was just trying to see if I understood how it worked. I think if you don't have the hubs locked then you only get the braking action of the tow/haul feature at the rear wheels, because if the hubs are unlocked then they would disengage when there is no forward drive pressure being applied (not in 4wd) and not allow any braking action to occur. If anyone can add any more info on this I would appreciate it.

I apologize, I didn't mean to hijack this thread. If I should start a new thread please let me know.

The Ford Torqueshift transmission is great. I understand that in 2010 it will be a six speed with the 6.7 Ford Scorpion diesel engine with something like 390 HP and 750 Foot/pounds torque.
