Calling all F-350 CC SD Diesel Dually Owners...

Ok, here’s the big question…. I was trying to look up the combined gross vehicle weight rating on my truck and low & behold the manual is missing, disappeared as in gone! Anyway I remember looking this up before and it seems like the gross combined weight rating was around 20,000 lbs. The GVWR for the truck is 11,500 pounds which is posted on the door. After looking at the fifth wheel towing information on rv.net it would appear that 20,000 lbs may be in-correct for this vehicle. Most people with similar F-350 trucks are posting the GVCWR as 23,000 lbs.

My truck is a 2004 crew cab Lariat F-350 Super Duty 6.0 PS diesel dually with the 4.1 gears (I believe) along with the towing mode. Now I’m not concerned in the least about how it will handle the Monty but if the GVCWR is in fact 20,000 lbs that will probably put me over slightly on the ratings.

Would like to know, does anyone have a manual that would have information for this truck tucked away somewhere, and would you care to look it up for me?

My 2004 manual does not include diesel ratings, but if your truck is 4X4 auto, comparable gas model (V10) is rated for 20K GCWR and max trailer weight of 12,200#. That's what my manual shows. For what it's worth.

In 2006 (same series truck I believe):
GCWR 23,500 lbs with 4.10 gears. (keep in mind, at least on Ford, GCWR is only affected by gear ration and engine. Things like cab and axles and tranny impact other specs, but not the GCWR).

Sorry it's not 2004 info, but I do have the 2006 specs if you need anything else (would need tranny and 4X4 or 4X2)

As I recall our 2003 F250 4X4 SRW 7.3L Diesel with extended cab has a GCVWR of 20,000 lbs and one of the reasons I didn't buy an F350 dually in that model year is that it had less or maybe equal towing capacity than the F250 SRW due to the fact that the F350 dually truck itself weighed more. I also recall the only major difference between F250 and F350 was in the Payload (pin weight) specs. Don't know how and if that changed in the 04 models. I do know on the 08 models the specs changed dramtically upward.

There was a change in suspension between 2004 and 2005. You can see in the links above that it resulted in the change from 20,000 for the '04 to 23,500 for the '05.

I guess the reason I’ve been thinking about all of this is that a fellow co-worker told me he was pulled over in Tennessee once on HWY 81 and he had to go back to the scales to weigh. This was along with two other campers of which he stated were half tons pulling big loads (fifth wheels I think he said). He was within and was given the go ahead but he didn’t think they did quite as well.

Anyway, I weighed my unit right after I first got the truck and this is what doesn’t make any sense to me. Our Monty states on the ID plate that it has a dry weight of 10,300 lbs. The weight ticket clearly indicates that with the Monty hooked up at that time that I was within the truck GVWR and had about 800 lbs to spare for the truck limit. At the same time the combined weight was showing 19,980 lbs of which one chart I seen indicated a combined towing weight limit of 20,000 lbs. According to the charts on these links that dieselguy posted, if I looked at them right our truck is rated to tow about 12,500 lbs. I would think that this in itself would place the combined weight rating in the neighborhood of around 24,000 lbs. If I can use someone else’s wording a little here, this sounds like fuzzy math to me. Does this make any sense to anyone?

As I mentioned earlier, I’m not concerned about the ability to tow but I think it would be a good feeling to know that I’m within the limits. I guess it gets a little fuzzy trying to figure it all out.

BTW it’s a 4X4. I forgot to list that with the other specs earlier.

Bill: You lose carrying capability due to the weight of the 4X4 extra gear (transfer case, differential, hubs) not to mention any other 'special' gear that is installed in the truck (carpeting, nice seats). As best I recall, the weights they publish are for the 'barebones' truck and then your additions subtract from that. For this reason my local Montana dealer originally gave me a 'weight sheet' that told the new owner to go weight the vehicle, fully loaded as it would be used when towing, to include the spouse, dogs, cats, kids, munchies, sleeping / napping equipment, etc.. Then to figure out what was left for the hitch weight that we could carry. It was surprising how much less it was than we expected -- the towing weight left over that is.

Not sure that this is what you were asking but hope it helps none-the-less.

My suggestion would be to stay far away from anyone pulling a big fifth wheel with a half ton truck! #1 for your own safety and second off not to be seen as someone who likes to push the envelope when the DOT boys see you following those pushing there luck with lessor trucks.

It must have been a senior moment! I was riding in the D/W’s car yesterday when I went to place something into the glove box and there it was. The missing manual I couldn’t find. Somehow, It doesn’t surprise me that it showed up. I know no one else on here would do anything like that would they?
