Dumbest thing I bought as a newbie - Montana Owners Club

I was just wondering, with no experience in RVing and inundated with all the gadgets, accessories and gizmos offered to an unsuspecting guy such as I, what was the dumbest thing you bought that you realized was unnecessary, worthless or plain stupid ? And are you man or woman enough too confess it ??

The most worthless thing we bought was a King Pin Stabilizer. We couldn't feel any difference with it. When we were at the Big Q in 2008 we had the JT Stabilizer system installed and gave the tripod away.......Another was that big level that mounts on the hitch, we never installed it, I think I still have it somewhere.....

I didn't do this, but the most worthless thing that I see being bought and used yet today is the jack stands that people are putting under their slide outs. Those things were designed for RVs when what we call "slide outs" were in reality "tip outs." Those tip outs needed support but our present day slide outs do not. Someone (a Montana owner) who was using them, asked me if they aren't needed, why do they sell them? My answer: Because you buy them! Some people have to have every gadget they see in Camping World! BTW this Montana owner would not accept my invitation to join the forum. His loss.

Like Phil, it would be the tripod. I also installed JTs. Still have the tripod, but haven't used it since.
Second would be a blue tote. Have never used it, but I guess someday I might. Have never spent more than 3 continuous days at a site without sewer hookups.

Probably as what Orv was talking about, the jacks for the slides. If I was going to set up for a long period of time I feel they would be worth while. However for quick trips, it’s a lot of work for minimal benefit and they are always in the way taking up room when trying to store them.

Definitely the king pin tripod stabilizer.
I was very fortunate though. I found some on the forum I could give it to, and they took it.

Another was the awning deflapper. I finally gave them away as a Christmas gift at a rally.

I also bought the tri-pod stabilizer. I do believe it helps but to me it’s more trouble to haul it around than it’s worth. I do however have one good use for it. When I want to display our flags it is real nice for holding the tail gate flag stands in place.

I will agree with the Tri-Pod Stabilizer. We have one, but it was given to us by friends when they bought a Motorhome. We don't see any difference with it.

We bought a King Pin Stabilizer use it once then put JT's on and then sold the Stabilizer to a friend who wanted it.

Cover for the entire 5th wheel. DW insisted on the dealer throwing one in, weighed more than me, and ripped the second time we took it off.

JT's Wireless Digital Level,The thing works, but the batteries only last for a couple of months and have to be replaced every time we use it. I can level it just a good with a $3.00 level.

Maybe this tread should be called "What Not To Buy"

For us a knock off brand of the AirMaxx vent covers, anything else does not compare or last. Also a magnetic Propane tank level reader....it is stuck to the road somewhere.

Ours would be the king pin stabilizer, oh, and those yellow plastic wheel chocks. They were not useless by any means but certainly a big pain in the **** as we were always trying to unjam them from under the tires so bought the expandable ones for between the tires.

The power adapter that connects the 30 and 20 amp recpts. to give you the 50 amps. Every campground that we visit has had a GFI breaker on the 20amp circuit.

I bought the 5th wheel stabilizer tripod also, but I can't say it's completely useless. It does help when running the washing machine, but I plan on adding JT's (or something similar) so it will soon become a thing of the past. Another item - the magnetic propane tank indicators. I didn't realize when I bought them you had to poor water over them to make them work. Duoh!

I guess you can include me in with those who purchased the kingpin tripod. Used it religiously for two years until I discovered that there was as much movement inside the rig with it installed as there was when not installed.

We had one but we bought ours and used in several campgrounds before they started installing the GFI receptacles. It worked very well and provided us with excellent power. If you're going to be where the receptacles are not GFI (some of the old city and county parks), for a period of time, I believe the investment is worth it.
