2006 K2500 Chevy 25 gal diesel--6.6 Durmax max 23,500 #
GVWR 9200 GAWR Frt 4670# GAWR RR 6084#
2017 Mountain High Country 380TH, max 17,000 #
Truck Weight 7,080#
Ft Axle 4,260 #
R Axle 6,260 (+176)
Trailer Axle 11,540
Pin 3440
Total Trailer Weight 14,980 (-2,020#)
Total GW 22,120 (-1,380#)

I figure I'm slightly over on the rear axle and have a total gross weight margin of 1,380 #s. I worked hard to try to balance my load as I loaded my trailer to minimize my pin weight. My 2500 6.6 is about at its max but with good tires and moderate speed it has been a good pull.

Most do not because they do not want to see the numbers. The first time we weighed our 06 3400 at the fall rally ready to tow to Florida we were 1K overweight and I thought we were OK on weight. We now have the 13 3402 which is pretty much the same as the 06 3400 . We are far from recreational campers as we are long timers and run heavy.

Today I finally got our rig to the scales to weigh. No more guessing or estimating. We are literally days away from going FT so I expected us to be heavy but I am hoping that I will find smarter ways to pack (read reduce weight).

Fully loaded, some gray and black tank content, no water and fueled:

2011 Ram 3500 Laramie CC, Cummins 6.7L, 19,400 Max trailer
2015 3440RL 16750 (GVW 16735)
Truck weight 8560 (GVWR 12,300)

Front axle 5020 (5500 max)

Rear axle 7820 (9350 max)

Trailer axles 12,500
Pin weight 4280 (payload 4400)
Combined weight 25,340 (GCWR 27,900)

We are full timers and our Montana CAT scaled @16,810 and won't vary by more than 20# from one day to another. Actual pin weight is 3,000 and as a retired trucker I NEVER estimate weights or believe brochures figures. When we purchase something new we discard something old.

This trip (6 week trip)

steer 4820#
drive 6620#
trailer 12720#
Gross 24160#

By rearranging i took 300# off the rear axle, and added 180# to the gross but now carry 1/3 tank of fresh water.

Very pleased with my new extended air pin box, truck is so much smoother. Also went from heavy PullRite Superglide to 50# PullRite Superlite.

Yes over by a bit in GWR & GCWR but not over on any axle and that is also why I bought a new DRW. While waiting for new TV I towed with a 2016 SRW f350 and a 2017 SRW F250. Stopped at scales and both were over some of the weight rated capacities.

We are heaviest when we are chasing high protein/low fat vittles in Central OR. I take extra water and fuel, gen, and more food than we could possibly eat in 2 weeks.

FA 4650
RA 6500
trailer 9150
total trailer weight 12830
pin weight 3680

That is the beauty of the 285RLD, it weighs 9425 lbs dry and with a 14k GVW it is darn hard to overload it...now the truck on the other hand ;-)

Finally got to my scale tickets.

Truck only
Steer. 4980
Drives 3680
Total 8660

Hooked up to camper and loaded . No water or waste.
Steer 5020
Drives 6680
Trailer axels 9720
Gross 21420

If I’m running the numbers right that’s
3040 extra on the truck
Total on trailer 12720.
A bit heavy on the truck but all other numbers are within spec.

IMHO 3040 lbs is WAY more than a bit (over) heavy. Just camped with a buddy who has a 2016 f-250 CC short bed diesel. We looked at his door sticker and it said payload was at 2075 lbs or so. So if you have, say 4 people in the truck at 150 lbs each and a 200 lb hitch, that leaves 1275 lbs for pin weight. No were near enough to tow much of a fifth wheel over say, 8000 lbs.

According to the door sticker you would be right. That weight includes a full tank, and myself. That’s how I travel 99% of the time. What wasn’t mentioned is that I have upgraded the spring pack to 1 ton springs. I have also contacted a ford dealer and found that all parts (brakes...) are the same on the 350. Again according to the sticker it is way heavy.

This is my Weigh In from MOC Fall Rally 2018. We were 455 lbs over for total. But, we loaded the max amount we would ever consider just to see what the result would be.

I hate to say it, but the door sticker is all that's going to matter in a fatal crash (god forbid)

I myself am so confused at why the payload is SOOO different between a 3/4 and 1 ton truck if the only difference is the spring pack.

I suspect that there are far more differences than one knows about. But who knows.

I, myself am going to play it on the safe side and tow with a truck designed to tow the weight I and pulling.

I agree about the sticker and a crash. So many out there have just added airbags or have chosen to do nothing at all. I could have done just the airbags but, after researching decided to go for the spring pack. From what I’ve found the difference is one spring.

Mtcrash1 is right. The only difference in a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton SRW pickups is the rear springs. The brakes, frame, and everything else is the same. The rear end ratio can be different but can be the same.

I don't understand how a manufacture can get away with just adding another spring and nearly doubling the trucks payload capacity.

Another thing I don't understand is why sooo many people buy a 3/4 ton truck when a 1 ton is say, only 1k more. Buy the time you add air bags/springs/timbrens or what ever, you could have saved all the time/effort and $$ and gotten a truck with enough payload capacity from the factory for beans more.

I know a lot of people don't like duallies for various reasons, will not fit in their garage/hard to park at the mall etc. but once you tow with one, you will more that likely kick yourself is the a-- for not doing it sooner.

It saves the manufacturers money by using the same parts as much as possible.
As far as why people buy 3/4 vs 1 ton, I can only answer that for my case. I didn’t have a need for a 1 ton when I bought mine. I was pulling a tt that would have been towable by a half ton. 4 years later here I am in 5er. Before putting the added spring in the truck the only problem I had was my truck was nose high. Never bottomed out in the rear. I could have just put airbags on and leveled it up but, chose to do this. While not technically legal it gives me more capacity and in my opinion is much safer. So many out there don’t even think of going this far or running their rig across the scales.

Got ya, It has cost me so much $$ selling/trading trucks and campers, I/we should have done what I read elsewhere. That is to buy your last truck/camper first. Skip the pop up/travel trailer and go straight for the large fifth wheel/motorhome.
