Florida-Georgia-North Carolina -- From Texas
Just a few comments about our recent trip through the Southeastern US from our home in East Texas.
We traveled a total of 3015 miles (on the pickup) including local travel at the various stopovers. We used 227.376 gallons of diesel for an average MPG (towing and local) of 13.265 MPG. The least price we paid was $2.659 and the highest was $2.799. We often saw higher prices, but we able to avoid paying them--with some care and a lot of good luck.
We avoided disaster on our last day of travel on the way home. Just outside Lake Village, Arkansas, I noticed a slight rythemic noise which became louder after I first noticed it. We were on US 82, at that point a 2 lane roadway with no shoulders and with 18 wheelers driving at maximum speed. My first opportunity to pull over was at a little gravel lane. I won't go into detail, but it was not pleasant. I first checked the trailer tires which showed no problem, then found embedded in the right rear pickup tire a piece of metal--thin but stiff--about 3 inches wide and 6 inches long. With pliers and screwdriver I was able to extract (like pulling a big tooth) the piece of metal. Since I had lost no pressure in the tire, I decided to try it for a while. 230 miles later we pulled into home port. The steel cords of the tire deflected the metal--you can see them and feel them in the gash. I have ordered a new tire, but this one is still holding.

David and Shirley, so glad to hear that you arrived home safely. I'm sure that it was scary to find that in your tire. Hope your trip went well otherwise and hope you had a good time.

Indeed, we had a very enjoyable trip. I think I'll take this opportunity to comment on the campgrounds in which we stayed:
Vicksburg, MS -- River Town RV Park. A new park, no shade but plenty of room and very good free WIFI. Out of town, but I would use it again. (overnight only)
Meridian, MS -- Bonita Lake RV Park. Another new park, large concrete sites. Good free WIFI. Would stay there again. (overnight only)
DeFuniak Springs, FL -- Sunset King Lake RV Resort. Large park family resort type. WIFI but charge in spite of listing without indicating there is a charge. Might use again if in area. (overnight only)
Panama City, FL -- St. Andrews State Park. One of our favorites for many years. Wonderful sites on Grand Lagoon. No WIFI but were able to pick up a faint signal across the water and used it (comercial WIFI site for which I paid about $25 per week). 8 nights and will definitely go back.
Columbus, GA -- Lake Pines RV Park. Only park in Columbus area. We stay there often to visit Shirley's uncle. We always enjoy it. Now has free WIFI. Will stay here again.
Athens, GA -- Pine Lake RV Resort. A wooded, rustic RV park which we enjoyed. Free WIFI, but because of setting had to go up to office area to get online. Could stay here again.
Lavonia, GA -- Sunset RV Park. A rural, quiet setting which we enjoy but which some would not prefer. No WIFI. We use this park by choice to visit my counsin who lives nearby. Will stay here again.
Waynesville, NC -- Creekwood Farms RV Park. Had a nice site on the creek (additional charge), free WIFI. Sites small and close together. Most limited parking for tow vehicles I have experienced: parallel in front of trailer, CLOSE. Even with that deficiency we could stay there again. We were there 3 nights.
Cullman, AL -- Cullman Campground. Another rural park. An old park but it was in the right place and we enjoyed it. Free WIFI. Would stay there again if in the area.

David, where is River Town RV Park in Vicksburg? Is that the one connected to a casino? We'll be traveling with our granddaughters and staying in Vicksburg. We usually stay at Magnolia RV Park, south on Hwy 61 (?). Would River Town be better? We need a nice swimming pool.

Judy,
River Town is further South on Highway 61 (about 6 miles I believe). It seems to be a new park and does not have a swimming pool. That probably makes it not the best choice for you. It is NOT connected to a casino.

Thank you, David, it is vitally important that some of our travelers have a swimming pool. Not so important for others (elderly people) in the group. I appreciate the info.

Judy, I will mention one other park where we have stayed several times in the Vicksburg area: Askew's Landing RV Park at Edwards, MS about 20 miles east of Vicksburg. It would not be everyone's cup of tea but it is in a relaxing, rural setting. They do have a swimming pool but we have never used it so cannot make any evaluation. It is not convenient to the city and they do not have WIFI, but it is a peaceful overnight stop. Sites are not paved, just grass.
With all these limitations, you may wonder why I bring it up. Click here for the answer:

What a beautiful setting, David. We may have driven through that campground an it is in a lovely setting.
We will probably try Magnolia RV Park again as it is convenience and an easy overnight stop with our grandgirls. We can even make a quick trp to Walmart, if necessary. Thanks for your suggestions. It's good to know that there is another campground to fall back on if Magnolia is full.
